Introduc*on ¡

• The ¡Scholarship ¡Program ¡started ¡in ¡1978 ¡at ¡a ¡*me ¡when ¡the ¡Lebanese ¡were ¡facing ¡social ¡and ¡economic ¡

problems ¡as ¡a ¡result ¡of ¡the ¡civil ¡war ¡in ¡Lebanon. ¡The ¡impact ¡leA ¡About ¡60% ¡of ¡Lebanese ¡families ¡are ¡on ¡the ¡ threshold ¡of ¡poverty, ¡the ¡deteriora*ng ¡economic ¡situa*on ¡resulted ¡in ¡high ¡unemployment ¡rate, ¡and ¡many ¡ teen-­‑age ¡students ¡are ¡forced ¡to ¡drop ¡out ¡of ¡school ¡either ¡to ¡work ¡or ¡to ¡wander ¡in ¡the ¡streets ¡ ¡

• The ¡Program ¡started ¡then ¡helping ¡eleven ¡students; ¡this ¡year ¡380 ¡students ¡are ¡being ¡helped. ¡During ¡the ¡last ¡

ten ¡years ¡a ¡total ¡of$1,500,000.00 ¡was ¡distributed ¡among ¡3634 ¡students. ¡

• ¡The ¡mission ¡of ¡the ¡Program ¡is ¡to ¡provide ¡financial ¡aid ¡to ¡underprivileged ¡children ¡of ¡Lebanon; ¡The ¡
• bjec*ve ¡is ¡to ¡help ¡them ¡through ¡their ¡high ¡school ¡educa*on ¡and ¡to ¡protect ¡the ¡young ¡adolescents ¡from ¡

entering ¡the ¡workforce ¡at ¡a ¡premature ¡age. ¡ ¡

• The ¡Program ¡is ¡funded ¡by ¡donors ¡from ¡the ¡the ¡following ¡regions: ¡
• Lebanon ¡where ¡it ¡is ¡registered ¡as ¡“Orthodox ¡Youth ¡Movement ¡Scholarship ¡Program” ¡
• USA ¡where ¡it ¡is ¡registered ¡as ¡a ¡not-­‑for ¡–profit ¡organiza*on ¡known ¡as ¡“Saint ¡Basil ¡Scholarship ¡Program” ¡

having ¡a ¡tax ¡exemp*on ¡status ¡

• France ¡where ¡it ¡is ¡also ¡registered ¡as ¡“Associa*on ¡Saint ¡Basile” ¡,having ¡also ¡tax ¡exemp*on ¡status. ¡

Scope ¡Of ¡Work ¡

• Social ¡workers ¡and/or ¡parish ¡priests ¡evaluate ¡the ¡needs ¡of ¡the ¡kids ¡and ¡their ¡families ¡and ¡decide ¡on ¡the ¡

amount ¡of ¡help ¡to ¡be ¡allocated ¡to ¡each ¡family ¡taking ¡into ¡considera*on ¡the ¡following ¡ – Financial ¡needs ¡ – Health ¡condi*ons ¡ – Psychological ¡and ¡emo*onal ¡condi*ons ¡ – Learning ¡and ¡physical ¡disabili*es ¡of ¡the ¡kids ¡

• Kids ¡in ¡public ¡schools: ¡the ¡Program ¡pays ¡the ¡registra*on ¡fees, ¡and ¡buys ¡the ¡books ¡and ¡office ¡supplies ¡
• Kids ¡in ¡private ¡schools: ¡the ¡Program ¡helps ¡with ¡up ¡to ¡50% ¡of ¡the ¡tui*on ¡
• Checks ¡are ¡issued ¡to ¡the ¡schools ¡of ¡the ¡respec*ve ¡students ¡
• Field ¡inves*ga*ons, ¡office ¡work, ¡and ¡management ¡are ¡taken ¡care ¡by ¡volunteers ¡(no ¡overhead ¡expenses) ¡
• Money ¡from ¡donors ¡is ¡distributed ¡only ¡as ¡scholarships. ¡
• A ¡team ¡of ¡specialists ¡provides ¡assistance, ¡when ¡needed, ¡to ¡the ¡kids ¡registered ¡in ¡private ¡as ¡well ¡as ¡public ¡

schools ¡ – Medical ¡condi*ons ¡(physicians ¡in ¡varying ¡special*es) ¡ – Speech ¡problems ¡(speech ¡therapist) ¡ – Psychological ¡Problems ¡(Psychologist) ¡
