Students Today Are Different...
- Today’s students are part of the first generation that...
○ Doesn’t need adults to get information ○ Can broadcast their every thought or emotion ○ Enjoys external stimuli at their fingertips 24/7 ○ Is in social contact at all times yet often in isolation ○ Will learn more from a portable device than a class ○ Experiences the same level of anxiety as a psychiatric patient did in the 1950’s

Two Types of Students...
- Internal Locus of Control - People who believe they are
responsible and in control of their own success.
- External Locus of Control - People who believe that fate
- r external forces control the outcomes of their life.

What Makes Successful Citizens...
- In 1966, researcher Julian Rotter found that those with an
“internal locus of control” became measurably more successful in life.
- Since 2002, U.S. students have shown a steady increase
in “external locus of control” and a decrease in “internal locus of control”.

Cleveland Virtual Academy
- After the success of CPAC, we still were not able to meet the needs of
every student
- There was an environment that we could not compete with, the home
environment.
- Once there was a thought if you could make the traditional school as good
as it could be, then students and families wouldn’t search out alternatives. ○ Time and experience has taught us that for many students it is not about what you are doing differently in your school setting, it is about the setting itself.
Why Cleveland Virtual Academy
- Simply put, there was A NEED
○ In Cleveland Schools during the 2018-2019 over 10% of our student body sought a form of digital learning. ○ Half of those sought their digital learning at the home setting. ○ We had to fill the need others were filling for us.
- The NEED had to be filled with a QUALITY SERVICE that was
COMMUNITY DRIVEN.
Why Cleveland Virtual Academy
- Simply put, there was A NEED
- The NEED had to be filled with a QUALITY SERVICE that was
COMMUNITY DRIVEN. ○ Our school’s campus and it’s resources must be open to them (e.g. resource rooms, computers, breakfast, lunch, transportation) ○ Daily monitoring by a certified Cleveland teacher living in the community ○ Content specific mentor teachers available electronically and in person ○ Partnering with the community via guest speakers, soft skills workshops, and a relationship with the public library
