Fateful End to the Bonet’s Electric Tower
The Bonet Electric Tower stood a year and a half in the otherwise cleared Midwinter Fair site, waiting for the Park Commission to make a decision to save it or scrap it. Finally the irritated John McLaren took maters into his own hands, when dynamite was placed under two support legs on January 12, 1896. Now the Park staff could finish clearing the site.

Mayor Phelan in 1900 evicted the Hagiwara family from the Japanese Tea Garden. He replaced staff with inexperienced “gardeners” (political cronies) who made a mess of the attraction. The Hagiwara family relocated across from GG Park, opening a more comprehensive and authentic Japanese operation and a commercial nursery.
