EDUCATIONAL DEFINITION OF IDD

I ntellectual Disabilities:

  • Significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning that adversely

affects a child’s educational performance existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period.

 Mild  Moderate  Severe

Developm ental Disabilities:

  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) does not include a

Developmental Disabilities category of eligibility.

  • IDEA Eligibility categories that may serve students with chronic conditions

that are due to mental or physical impairments include:

 Multiple Disabilities  Orthopedic I m pairm ents  Other Health I m paired  Deaf-Blindness

Existing Program s and Supports

Services and supports that assist students in transitioning to college and/ or career are: – Identified in the student’s Individual Education Program (IEP) which also includes their individualized Secondary Transition Plan beginning at age 14 in North Carolina – Directly linked to assisting the student in reaching their Post Secondary Goals (Education/ Training, Employment, Independent Living Skills) as documented in their Secondary Transition Plan
