  2. Today’s Goals You will: ● Explore the NGSS Playbook as a resource for your school and district. ● Begin to draft an action plan to implement NGSS in your school or district (or strengthen an existing plan). ● Share the work that is already happening in your school or district.

  3. Who are the “Oregon Science Leaders?” A group of 39 TOSAs, coordinators, and teacher leaders who want to change the landscape of science education in Oregon. ● 18 school districts ● 2 ESDs ● 2 ODE specialists ● And growing!

  4. Do you Agree or Disagree? Why? My school/district prioritizes science learning and teaching.

  5. Do you Agree or Disagree? Why? The teachers in my school/district understand the shifts required to teach the Next Generation Science Standards.

  6. Do you Agree or Disagree? Why? The practices of scientists and engineers are more important than the content of science and engineering.

  7. STEM Earnings in Oregon Median earnings in Oregon STEM jobs are: $38.98/hour Median earnings in all other Oregon jobs are: $18.34/hour

Units that integrate science, literacy, and mathematics a. Content knowledge and practices 4. Development and use of high-quality assessments

  12. 1. Foundational Knowledge of NGSS 1. NGSS are three-dimensional 2. NGSS are designed to engage students with phenomena in the natural world to develop understanding and solve problems 3. NGSS are connected to Common Core Math and ELA 4. Teachers need ongoing PD where they can be learners 5. Bookmark it! http://ngss.nsta.org/

  13. 2. Equitable and Engaging Instructional Strategies 1. Instruction must provide scaffolded opportunities for scientific discourse 2. Take advantage of place-based opportunities 3. Focus on doing the practices 4. Analyze the systemic inequities -- tracking, prerequisites, advising to demographic groups . . . 5. Be an unrelenting advocate for students!!!

  14. 3. Integrated Units 1. Utilize the practices (Venn diagram) 2. Students need basic knowledge and skills in each domain, but also the opportunity to apply their knowledge in integrated experiences. 3. Be intentional about the HOW, WHAT, and WHY. 4. Science and math teachers must be teachers of reading and writing!

  15. 4. High-Quality Assessments 1. Assessments must address all three dimensions 2. Focus on feedback 3. Utilize “Performance Expectations” and “Evidence Statements” 4. Design performance tasks that can mirror Smarter Balanced 5. Recommend a minimum number of instructional minutes for your school or district (preferably daily)

  16. Action Steps What are the action steps that your school/district could be taking this Fall to begin or further your transition to NGSS? What additional information do you need to gather?
