COVID-19 Must-Know: Premise of New Normal

11

  • ECQ prolongs the peak and stalls the increase of

COVID-19 cases in our country.

  • ECQ buys time for the health system to prepare and

respond appropriately to the COVID-19 health situation.

  • Estimated infection rate (R0) decreases from 2 (1 person

infects 2 other people) to 1.5 with the implementation of the ECQ. Lifting the ECQ may mean more infected people.

  • Lifting the ECQ is inevitable but must be done gradually

as not to strain our health system.

COVID-19 Must- Know:

Principles

  • f New

Normal

1 2 3 4

Evidence-based preventive measures should be the basis

  • f our new normal

when ECQ is lifted. New normal is highlighting health consciousness in every aspect of

  • ur activities of

daily living. New normal is about resetting and making practices more efficient and easier for the people to

  • do. It should not be

viewed as another complication in our lifestyle. The New normal movement acknowledges that social behavioral changes take time and do not happen overnight. As such, there is a need to amp up messages and utilize every channel available in communicating and eventually establishing the new norm.

Mechanisms

  • Implementation is a settings-based approach, requiring

intersectoral action

  • Stratified implementation of public health interventions

depending on risk severity grading of the area (eg., LGU/Province)

  • DOH sets the minimum prescribed interventions in

various settings, decision-makers have administrative leeway to build on or propose adjustments to the interventions.

Effects on Mental Health

  • Poor mental health can lead to poor work performance, acute

stress disorder, and post-traumatic stress.

  • Who are more likely to experience poor mental health:

○ vulnerable groups (women, children, the elderly, etc.) ○ healthcare workers ○ people who have or have had COVID-19 and their families ○ people with poor health

  • Domestic violence and abuse are also more likely to happen in

isolation or quarantine.

slide-37
SLIDE 37

Stigma, Discrimination, & Mental Health

46

How to improve mental health?

shameful.

○ Provide information and tips on managing mental

health and where to seek help.
