On Tuesday 12 June, local historian John Hickman led an enthusiastic group

• n a "perambulation" around part of South Norwood

Things we learnt!

• On the clock steps, suffragist Ethel Fennings and her sisters spoke

regularly in support of votes for women

• There has long been a Japanese church hidden away in an unassuming

building in Suffolk Rd, which runs behind the High Street

• Oliver Grove, where many grand original houses still stand, was originally

a gated estate with four massive brick pillars holding the gate. Two were demolished, but luckily two were saved and now stand at the entrance to South Norwood Recreation ground in Selhurst Rd, next to Holy Innocents church…..
