Why are there 4 Gospels?

• The number four is symbolic of earthly completeness.
• On the fourth day of the creation week, God completed the

material universe - He brought into existence the sun, the moon, and all the stars.

• Four is the only number in which the number of letters used to

spell the number are the same as the value of its name Four derives its meaning from creation - it is the creation number

• Four physical elements: Earth, Wind, Fire & Water
• Four things make up the universe: Time, Energy, Space & Matter
• Four directions: North, South, East & West
• Four seasons of the year: Fall, Winter, Spring & Summer
• Four phases of the moon: First, Half, Full & Last
• Four divisions of the day: Morning, Noon, Evening & Night
• Four dimensions: Length, Width, Height & Time

Four derives its meaning from creation - it is the creation number

Mark 1:1

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

The 1st Gospel Written

• Believed to have been written in Rome
• Between 65 -70 AD, near the time Peter was martyred
• Is referred to as Peter’s gospel – acting as his secretary
• The Gospel of Mark was the first to circulate, which suggests it

was written by a younger follower – John Mark

• Paul refers to Mark as an ‘under-rower’ - the Greek word for

‘minister’ (2 Tim 4:11) - the lowest slave position, a servant

• The son of a wealthy woman, Mary (Acts 12:12) – when Peter was

freed from prison

• Their large home served as a meeting place for many of the

disciples after Pentecost. The Upper Room of the Last Supper & Acts 2 ?

• Mark became a disciple of Peter --- calls Mark ‘his son’ 1 Pet 5:13
• Mark came from Cyrene in Libya, and was a cousin of Barnabas
• Mentions Rufus (son of Simon of Cyrene) Paul names in Rom 16:13

• Mark accompanied Paul & Barnabas on the 1st missionary journey
• His departure to Jerusalem disappointed Paul, causing a conflict

and parting with Barnabas (Acts 15:36-40)

• Paul & Mark later reconcile (Col 4:10) (2 Tim 4:11) --- Paul says

Mark is useful in ‘service’

• Paul also refers to Mark’s mother, Mary, as his own
• John Mark is credited with bringing Christianity to Egypt

The Audience Mark’s purpose was to write down the Gospel as Peter would have presented it to the Romans, or Gentiles – reasons for this belief:
