Building Markham’s Future Together Journey to Excellence Curbside Electronics and Battery Collection Ban • By- law collection ‘ban’ came into effect January 1, 2013 • E-waste ban has been highly effective • Residents can drop electronics at locations across Markham for recycling • Partnership with Lions Club and Fire Services for over 30 E-waste community drop-off events across Markham in 2014 • Partnership with Eco Watch for battery recycling in Markham schools

Building Markham’s Future Together Journey to Excellence Mandatory Material Separation By-law Clear Bags for Residue • Clear bag program now fully implemented across Markham • Residue in dark bags at the curb are stickered and not collected • High level of public acceptance, participation, and compliance

Building Markham’s Future Together Journey to Excellence Zero Waste for Schools • Funded through MESF • Total of 31 elementary schools and 1 secondary school have adopted Zero Waste with Markham support • Auditing process to begin in 2015 • Program fully supported by both School Boards • York Region may adopt as region wide program

  7. Building Markham’s Future Together Journey to Excellence Textile and Carpet Diversion • Textiles are 7% of waste stream • New Textile diversion plan 2015 • Rolled carpet recycling at Thornhill depot 2015

Building Markham’s Future Together Journey to Excellence Recycling Council of Ontario Awards • Markham was recognized with 4 awards at the 2014 RCO • GOLD LEVEL – Diversion • SILVER LEVEL – Clear Bag Communications • BRONZE LEVEL – Marleigh Zero Waste • BRONZE LEVEL - Zero Waste for Schools • Cover of Solid Waste Magazine

Building Markham’s Future Together Journey to Excellence York Region – Smart Living Master Plan • In 2013/14 York Region completed it’s Smart Living Master Plan • Partnering with local municipalities to deliver programs • Markham and York Region working co operatively on Textiles diversion, Multi residential diversion, and Zero Waste for Schools • Blue bag for recycling initiative not adopted by York Region Council • Smart Living Plan to focus on food waste reduction
