SDM network day – opening thoughts

  • We need to change from a unidirectional flow of

information (counselling) to a two-way consultation

  • Will only happen if we’re sound at clinical decision-

making

  • Will have an emotional consequence on pharmacy

staff which we are arguably a) not used to b) not trained for

  • Is about who we are as well as what we do
  • Not convinced that as a profession we get this yet -

look around you…..

SDM network day – opening thoughts So today we are setting out to:

  • Ask experts to speak on how SDM can work for key

medicines-related priorities

  • Be real about the challenges and what needs to

change

  • Give a taster for the CPPE programme on SDM
  • Get you thinking about what you might do in your patch
  • Please give us feedback – evaluation survey/email/in

person

What we’re going to do next

  • 1. A straw poll
  • 2. A real SDM situation
  • Nina sharing, Barry facilitating, audience contributing
  • Planned but deliberately unrehearsed
  • 3. Some reflections
  • Not showing you how to do SDM, but stepping back

and reflecting on an experience shared

  • 4. Your thoughts

25/02/2020 9

A real SDM situation Aim: for Nina to share a recent consultation experience and to reflect, ‘live’, what mattered to Nina and her thoughts looking back Nina’s story: a. setting the context
