  1. Maglocks are your BFF!

  2. INTRODUCTION Escape room techs 2001 12 (n) Entrepreneurial vision for the BS Computer Engineering escape room industry; Started in 17 in 2001 2016 Developed dozens of electronic and mechanical systems Founded and owns Anidea Engineering, a product development company for 17 years

  3. What is a maglock?

  4. the maglock ▪ Armature – dumb metal plate ▪ Electromagnet – electrical device ▪ Protection/safety ▪ Voltage selection

  5. Maglocks are everywhere ▪ Access control systems ▪ Automated door locks ▪ Escape Rooms ▪ Drawer locks ▪ Etc.

  6. Other actuators ▪ Maglocks are specialized magnetic actuators ▪ Solenoids (push and pull movements) ▪ Motors ▪ Linear actuators ▪ Rotational actuators

  7. pros and cons ▪ Advantages ▪ Remote operation ▪ Magnetic locks can be turned on and off remotely by adjusting the power source. ▪ Easy to install ▪ Magnetic locks are generally easier to install than other locks since there are no interconnecting parts. ▪ Quick to operate ▪ Magnetic locks unlock instantly when the power is cut, allowing for quick release in comparison to other locks. ▪ Sturdy ▪ Magnetic locks may also suffer less damage from multiple blows than do conventional locks. If a magnetic lock is forced open with a crowbar, it will often do little or no damage to the door or lock. There are no moving parts in an electromagnetic lock to break.

  8. pros and cons ▪ Disadvantages ▪ Requires a constant power source in order to be secure. ▪ Can de-energize in the event of a power outage, disabling security. ▪ Expensive in comparison to mechanical locks. ▪ Requires additional hardware for safe operation.

  9. Safe use ▪ Don’t intentionally lock people in rooms ▪ Use REX (request exit) buttons ▪ I prefer the timer based ones ▪ Don’t hold/hang things over people without additional tethers ▪ Fail Safe – can not lock people in ▪ Fail Secure – can lock people in

  10. mounting • 99% of maglocks are designed to maglock be mounted face to face armature • Special slide versions • Interlocking versions Resistance to sliding is weak → maglock armature

  11. mounting maglock • Perfect alignment is imperative!!! • Center bolt actually allows for armature pivot. mounting structure maglock maglock armature bushing Bolt mounting structure

  12. electrical • One or more inductors/coils • Nothing more than a coil or winding of wire • Run current though it, you get a magnetic field • Can be run in series • Voltage is additive, current is the same • Can be run in parallel • Current is additive, voltage is the same

  13. electrical • Most maglocks are designed for 12V or 24V operation • 300lb, 420mA @ 12VDC, 210mA @ 24VDC • Inductive devices • This means they make a electrical spike when they turn off • Spike can cause interference • Quality maglocks have protection built in

  14. control • Relay – simple close circuit control • Robust, error tolerant, noisy • Transistor – solid state solution • More robust when used properly, not error tolerant, quiet • Solid state relay – solid state solution • More costly, slightly more fault tolerant, quiet

  15. To Power Supply Control – relay FX450 Maglock Add MOV or Diode if using cheap maglocks

  16. Control – transistor FX450 To Power Supply Maglock Add MOV or Diode if using cheap maglocks
