PREPARATION:
➤ Once having made the decision of making a bake
sale, we needed to sort out the venue where we would be holding it.
➤ Resorting to our friends, we booked a table inside
the Union for the 1st of March.
Transcript of Facebook Messages:
- Tabea: I went to the union on Friday and they said if we wanna
do a bake sale at the Union we should email “James Vavra”.
- Zoi: Ok.
- Tabea: But Heather you said, your friend is responsible for it
right? So should we email him or where will the bake sale take place?
- Heather: Yes, and she already booked us a place for this
Thursday from 10 to 2.30 in the Union. I have arranged this with Sofia.
BAKE SALE REQUIREMENTS:
➤ To be able to set up a bake sale, at least one of the members of the group must
undergo a training session organised by the University, where allergens and hygienic issues would be discussed.
➤ We faced the problem that not all the
members our group were available for the time the training would be taking
- place. Fortunately, our colleague Eva,
managed to find some time to go and represent us all. She later took care on discussing with us the information and the guidelines she had been taught.
THERE WAS NO TURNING BACK NOW!
WE POSTED THE DETAILS OF THE EVENT ON FACEBOOK…
ONE LAST STEP BEFORE THE DAY: ROTA AND BAKING DISTRIBUTION
➤ For the “shift” arrangements, we
carried out a poll in our Facebook group chat, where each of us indicated the times each would be available to be at the stall.
➤ Everybody contributed in the gathering of the
- ffered products:
➤ Tabea: Baking of Muffins/Cupcakes. ➤ Zoi: Baking of chocolate cake and bringing
Maggie’s poster.
➤ Yomna: Material brought from Maggie’s
(flyers, bracelets, etc).
➤ Eva: Baked vegan Brownies. ➤ Heather: Baked cheese cake and banana bread.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE DAY:
➤ We all gathered early in the morning, despite the heavy snow, and
started setting up our stall.
➤ Creative minds worked together to make the stand as aesthetically
appealing as possible. Even friends from outside our group felt
- bliged to lend a hand in the decoration. We worked together
diligently, and finished within seconds of having started.
➤ Having most of the classes cancelled because of the cold weather,
we were all able to be present and work together during the entire event.
➤ The task of attracting people’s attention and making them
interested in investing on Maggie’s, was hard at first. Moreover, seeing people increasing the speed of their pace to avoid us, was at times, hard to overlook. However, the fact of being all together, rendered us enough support and courage to keep on working with
- ptimism.
THURSDAY 1ST OF MARCH
REMARKABLE PEOPLE
Several people approached us, laid a 5-10 pound note on the table and left with a smile and wish for courage for the people Maggie’s took care of.
That Thursday was a man’s Birthday , who had decided to celebrate it at the Union with his friends. Rushing past our stall, he apologised for not stopping and promised to return later to get something. Needless to say that we all lost every hope on seeing him again. But, to our surprise, he kept his word. An hour or two later, he came back with a soup container between his hands, full of coins. He handed it
- ver to us smiling, and proceeded to leave the building wanting no reward for his contribution. He said he
wanted to leave the “goods” for the people who needed a further enticer to be able to let go of a piece of their possessions. Astonished all of us, I don’t think we will ever forget this man. At least I know I won’t. The person guarding the stall beside us, not only helped us to set up the stall, but was also our first
- customer. He was also the first (and not the last), to
remind us of the beauty of generosity. That is, knowing the destination of the raised money, he paid the double for a piece of cake, rejecting the change, but asking us, when possible, to forward his wishes of hope and strength to the terminally ill.
