This week

  • ‘th’. It is quite unique to English, very

commonly used and can be a challenge for all English learners.

  • Clearly pronouncing word endings is very

important in English pronunciation as it indicates tense, plural/singular and comparisons – very helpful for IELTS practice.

  • Also voiced and unvoiced sounds.

‘th’ sound – /ð/, /θ/

Voiced ‘th’ /ð/ Unvoiced ‘th’ /θ/ Beginning - these, those, this, though, therefore, their/there. Beginning – thing, three, third, thirty, through, thigh, thank you. Middle – although, clothing, either, other. Middle – toothbrush, healthy, birthday, something. End –bathe, breathe, soothe. End – bath, breath, teeth, 4th...19th,, north/south.

Listeners listen for word endings to understand plurals, tense and comparisons, for example:

  • –s, -es,
  • –ing, -ed,
  • -er, -est,
