Information for Parents “Everybody is a genius! But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is useless.”
The purpose of the evening is to share with you what will be happening in Year 2 with regards to both statutory and teacher assessments. Children will sit tests but these scores are only used to support teachers’ on-going assessment. These assessments will provide information about how your child is progressing compared to children of the same age nationally. This is not a school initiative. It is government led and applies to every state school in England.
teaching and learning. As well as our on-going work, children will take part in a variety
statutory assessment tasks in the key areas of learning which adds to the picture and supports our own teacher assessments. At the end of the year the children will be identified as working towards, working at
expected standard for a Year 2 child.
Teachers arrive at judgements by taking into account strengths over a period of time, rather than focusing on just one piece of work. We already know what your child is capable of and how well they are achieving. Towards the end of May they will sit short tests to support these judgements. The children will be in small groups and will be required to work independently.
All children are continuously assessed through rigorous teacher assessment. Children working within the Year 2 curriculum will be required to sit the tests. The tests are not strictly timed and most children are actually unaware that they are taking them as we incorporate them into our normal everyday classroom practice.
