The pharmaceutical industry is a major asset to the EU economy • It employs almost 615,000 people in total, of whom 103,000 are engaged in R&D activities • It is the leading high-technology sector in terms of trade surplus in Europe, amounting to almost €33bn in 2004 • Its contribution to trade is growing, accounting for >5% of total EU manufacturing exports in 2004, compared with 2% in 1990 2

EFPIA • The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) represents the research-based pharmaceutical industry operating in Europe. • Founded in 1978, its members comprise: –30 national pharmaceutical associations –44 pharmaceutical companies Through its membership, EFPIA represents the common views of about 2,100 large, medium and small companies including the entire European research-based pharmaceutical sector. • Two specialised groups within EFPIA: –EFPIA/EVM - European Vaccine’s Manufacturers (8) –EFPIA/EBE – European Biopharmaceutical Enterprises (38) 3
