Jews have a variety of ways of welcoming people into the Jewish community. When a baby is born, they are given an English name (or a name in whichever language the parents speak) as well as a Hebrew name. Boys also have a special ceremony eight days after they are born called Brit Milah. During this ceremony, the baby is circumcised to show that he is a member of the Jewish community.

When Jewish boys reach the age of 13, it is time for them to become adults in the Jewish community. They become Bar Mitzvah, which literally means ‘son of commandment’. At 12, girls become Bat Mitzvah (daughter of commandment). At this time, it is customary to have a ceremony to mark the occasion. There is usually a special service after the main Shabbat worship on a Saturday morning as well as a party

  • afterwards. A boy’s thirteenth

birthday and a girl’s twelfth birthday are the biggest cause for celebration in Jewish families.

During the Bar Mitzvah ceremony, the boy is called to read from the Torah scroll. This is read in Hebrew and is prepared in advance. Most people also give a special speech called a ‘dvar Torah’. Not all Jewish communities follow the same traditions for Bat

  • Mitzvah. Some girls will read from the

Torah but others may just give a talk instead.

This picture shows a boy carrying the Torah scroll for the first time during his Bar Mitzvah celebrations. Only adults are allowed to do this. This shows his entrance into adulthood.

At a Bar or Bat Mitzvah party, people give cards and presents just as they do for a normal birthday party. Parents will often buy their children a special present for this occasion. A Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a special time for the parents too as it is marks the end of their religious responsibility

  • ver their children.

Once a child reaches Bar or Bat Mitzvah, their parents are no longer responsible for any sins they commit.

Can you see any similarities between these initiations and those of other religions? Can you see any differences?
