Arthur Schopenhauer 1818

„Der Wahrheit ist allerzeit nur ein kurzes Siegesfest beschieden zwischen den beiden langen Zeiträumen, wo sie als Paradox verdammt und als Trivial gering geschätzt wird.“ Incorrectly if widely known as: ‘All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.’

What is EMDR 1

To reiterate the EMDR Therapy Protocol involves:

  • 1. Accessing a distressing memory that generates a presently held level of

disturbance: image, cognitions (beliefs), emotions and body sensations;

  • 2. Stimulating this disturbing memory bi-laterally using Dual Attention;
  • 3. Moving the memory – physically, in regard to subjective disturbance, and

psychologically in terms of meaning, This is done in regard to 8 distinct phases considering the triadic elements of Past – Present – Future. All the rest is detail. Derek Farrell 2017

What is the Transpersonal

  • In EMDR, a non-rational right-brain experience of metaphor and

meaning - the ultimate transpersonal psychotherapeutic approach.

  • ‘Beyond the personal', reflecting core aim of exploring human

growth, helping people discover a deeper and more enduring essential self that exists beyond the conditioned ego.

  • We human beings are literally stardust, products of billions of years
  • f evolution, and, as long as we breathe, programmed to heal -

physically and psychologically.

  • In short, It’s a Kind of Magic, breaking the energetic spells that have

trapped clients in the emotional dysfunctions of their past.

  • Weird indeed, and even - in the Findhorn Foundation’s useful

definition of a miracle as a simple but existential shift of perception - miraculous.

Lunch Reminder - What is EMDR

To reiterate, the EMDR Therapy Protocol involves: 1. Accessing a distressing memory that generates a presently held level of disturbance: image, cognitions (beliefs), emotions and body sensations 2. Stimulating this disturbing memory bilaterally using Dual Attention 3. Moving the memory – physically, in regard to subjective disturbance, and psychologically in terms of meaning 4. This is done in regard to 8 distinct phases considering the triadic elements of Past – Present – Future All the rest is detail. Derek Farrell 2017

SLIDE 27

What is EMDR? EMDRIA def

1. Unique standardized set of procedures and clinical protocols which incorporates dual focus of attention and alternating bilateral visual, auditory and/or tactile stimulation 2. Based on available relevant research, treatment fidelity to the 8 phases (Shapiro, 2001) produces the best results. However, in certain situations and for some populations, […] procedures may be implemented in more than one way as long as the broad goals of each phase are achieved. 3. […] relationship sufficient to give the client a sense of safety and foster […] ability to tell the therapist what s/he is experiencing throughout the reprocessing. The client develops mastery of skills in self-soothing and in affect regulation as appropriate to facilitate dual awareness during the reprocessing sessions and to maintain stability between sessions. 4. It may be important, especially for those clients with complex trauma, to enhance the ability of the individual to experience positive affect through promoting the development and expansion of positive and adaptive memory networks, thus expanding the window of affect tolerance, and stimulating the development of the capacity for relationship.

Flexibility

  • Innovation, Flexibility and Clinical Judgment as Applied to

Particular Clients or Special Populations

  • BVa. To achieve comprehensive treatment effects a three-

pronged basic treatment protocol is generally used so that past events are reprocessed, present triggers desensitized, and future adaptive outcomes explored for related challenges. The timing of addressing all three prongs is determined by client stability, readiness and situation. There may be situations where the order may be altered or prongs may be

  • mitted, based on the clinical picture and the clinician’s

judgment.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Adaptation

  • BVb. As a psychotherapy, EMDR unfolds according to the

needs, resources, diagnosis, and development of the individual client in the context of the therapeutic relationship.

  • Therefore, the clinician, using clinical judgment,

emphasizes elements differently depending on the unique needs of the particular client or the special population.

  • EMDR treatment is not completed in any particular

number of sessions. It is central to EMDR that positive results from its application derive from the interaction among the clinician, the therapeutic approach, and the client.

  • 90% of the research participants would NOT have

worked on their trauma experience without using the B2T protocol

  • 95% Disclosed their trauma after EMDR Therapy
  • B2T Protocol was SAFE

Own Research…..

Three Prongs

  • Survey Monkey Therapists

1. EMDR Focus mailing list (400+, of whom ≃ 250 personally Parnelll-trained) 2. JISCMail (1000+) and Blog ( 87 returns) 3. Survey Monkey Own Clients (2007- present)

  • 164 BCC-ed invitation
  • 49 returns
  • Qualitative w/ Consultants

– Semi-structured IVs – Uni Worcs ethics

Key AF-EMDR Research Takeaways

  • Some negatives. But overwhelming positives. This stuff works!
  • Central role of therapeutic relationship in more complex trauma
  • Importance of resourcing/creative imagination/safety/ structure.
  • And of proactive bridging for attachment-related target identification.
  • SP = 8 phases and 3 prongs. Standard Procedural Steps. Not just Phase

3 as widely misunderstood.

  • AF-EMDR as trained by Parnell is viewed by those who use and

experience it as mainstream EMDR.

  • Parnell - not referenced, labelled “not-EMDR” - is wrongly viewed as

an outlaw. Appeal to all to get beyond the politics/personalities.
