DO DORC O Objective: :

Increa ease O e Opi pioid R Resea esearch h Produ ductivi vity

  • Provide a forum for opioid and addiction investigators to connect
  • Examine and address data research needs of opioid and addiction research
  • DORC provides FREE consultation in addiction-related research, epidemiology,

data management, and clinical care for the investigative community

  • DORC team leaders:
  • Adam Gordon - lead investigator
  • Jerry Cochran - lead investigator
  • Nancy West - biostatistics/epidemiology/data management
  • Mitch Garets - admin support/communications

Action I Items f from Prev evious Mt Mtg

  • Creation of a website to access DORC services

https://medicine.utah.edu/internalmedicine/epidemiology/parcka/gin/research/ dorc-service.php

  • Clarify if UPBD can provide data in formats other than plain text files and provide

more detailed data dictionaries with data requests

Utah P h Popul pulation D n Database e (UPDB DB) t team repr presen esentative

  • UPDB – a rich and valuable data source at the U. of U. that supports

research on epidemiology, public health and demography (among

  • ther research disciplines)
  • One set of records available from UPDB: Utah All Payer Claims Data
  • Medical and pharmacy claims data across healthcare insurance carriers

(payers)

  • The UPDB has graciously let DORC partner with them in our efforts to

increase opioid addiction research productivity

  • Provided DORC with access to the Utah All Payer Claims Data

DORC RC Up Updates es/Curren ent P Projec ects

  • Inclusion/exclusion criteria for prescription opioid datasets
  • A request for a dataset of all opioid prescriptions will likely include:
  • Opioid agonists
  • Opioid antagonists (e.g. naloxone)
  • Non-pain medication opioids (e.g. buprenorphine)
  • Developing lists of national drug codes and drug names for opioid antagonists

and medication opioid groups so that these can be easily identified and excluded from the data set, depending on the research question

DORC RC Up Updates es/Curren ent P Projec ects

  • Algorithms to calculate morphine milligram equivalents from claims

database information

  • Extract from NDC
  • Type of opioid, strength per unit
  • Extract from Rx
  • Quantity (of pills, tablets, film, etc)
  • Number of days supplied
  • Extract from CDC
  • Morphine equivalency conversion factor
  • Example: 10 mg oxycodone tablets x (120 tabs/30 days) x 1.5 (conversion

factor for oxycodone) = 60 morphine milligram equivalents/day

DORC RC Up Updates es/Curren ent P Projec ects

  • Algorithm to determine co-prescribed addictive medication use (ex.
  • pioid and benzodiazepine medications)
  • Identification of diagnostic ICD-9/10 codes that indicate opioid

abuse

DOR ORC P Progress

  • DORC Website:

https://medicine.utah.edu/internalmedicine/epidemiology/parcka/gin/ research/dorc-service.php

  • Can access consultation services from website
  • Several coding algorithms in process
