Richard’s Story

Pall Mall Barbers CEO Richard Marshall has been in the male business since 1988 where, aged 12, he was tasked with sweeping the barbershop floor as the barber’s assistant. Richard’s over 30 years of experience working from the shop floor up to CEO has given him a unique perspective on how to deliver a flawless male grooming experience which his various industry awards have

2 ½ years in the making, Pall Mall Barber has launched in New York’s Rockefeller Centre. Richard’s dream has come true after being inspired by the New York skyline as a child. Richard looked towards the US as his next source of growth. Walking the Manhattan streets and noticing the busy shoeshine store with an empty store next to it in the Rockefeller Centre was the start of Richard’s American adventure.

Richard discovered the rich history of Pall Mall Barbers whilst renovating the Trafalgar store. An

Toilet Saloon”. We have maintained many of the traditions of the original barbershop, but we now practice a more modern approach to hairstyling, haircare, shaving, beard and skincare!

Whenever I’m in the shop, I will always sweep the floor because it comes second nature to me; it’s in my blood. It’s very much a hands-on team and philosophy for the group and that’s what our customers tell us they like and enjoy when they visit us time and time again. We have grown significantly since that first store and have just opened our 7th branch in New York City this year, with plans for a rapid expansion with 4 new stores opening every year.

From an ambitious dream

When Richard first took the lease on the Trafalgar store, it was in a sorry state. dilapidated and in serious need of renovation. After a lot of long, hard days pulling plaster from the walls and completely re-fitting the store, he opened the first branch in 2005.

BARBER EDUCATION

Being on the board of the City & Guilds means we set the standards for British Barbering education in the UK. We comprehensively train new staff with goals and incentives to ensure that they deliver to our exact standards. Assessment is given and bespoke training and support is delivered to each individual new team member of the PMB family. We have perfected our training process from the team’s 350+ years of barbering experience which encompasses the best international grooming techniques from our team of barbers. We don’t send people on training courses but cultivate their talent and give them the ability to deliver male grooming services to an excellent standard for each customer.

EVENTS HISTORY

Pall Mall Barbers popups were the brain child of General Manager Dan who grew up in the market town of Malton Mowbray. Inspired by the hustle and bustle of the market stalls, Dan saw the

  • pportunity to make a popup store for barbering.

Taking it beyond a dream, Dan worked with a carpenter to sketch out specifications for a popup which he presented to Pall Mall Barber’s Founder Richard who saw the potential and decided to invest in making a custom-built popup barbering. PMB’s first major event was the London Coffee Festival in 2012, where we caught the eye of BMW, who asked us to run a stand at one of their

  • launches. After that it just snowballed; we’ve

worked with Google, Jack Daniels and MasterCard, we’ve done events around the world, and have already got bookings as far forward as 2019 for the Rugby World Cup!

Corporate events

We’ve previously worked with high-profile companies such as Google and Facebook delivering popup salons in their offices. Working with corporate teams, we put together an event that meets their exact

  • needs. Attendees can book their

appointments in advance and receive a multisensory experience that they can take away.

B2B events

Working alongside B2B event organisers, we construct and deliver a tailored and fully integrated event solution which adds buzz and engagement on the day and acts as a social hub of the event.

Co-branded promotions

We collaborated with Oliver Sweeny to launch their new collection. We showcase how the brand and products fit in with the lifestyle and values of a gentleman alongside other brands. We frequently run product placement and promotions in our stores to drive sales for third party brands. Our campaign with The London Sock Exchange had all of our barbers wearing their distinct socks in store.

High profile events

We’ve worked at a number of celebrity weddings to make sure all the men look incredible for the big day. We were invited by the WWE to sharpen the image of their athletes with highly specified haircuts and shaves. These image reworks were done in collaboration with the image rights agents of the athletes and fed directly into the merchandising lines of the athletes which are a core revenue driver for the WWE business.

Consumer Events

We’ve worked at a large number of B2C events, providing services to customers at events and in public. There is always a high demand for our services with queues sometimes getting as long as 25 people. Events we’ve worked at include the Champions League Final and the Virgin London Marathon.

EVENTS We like to go the extra mile and make sure that our clients get exactly what they need.

As part of their Christmas promotional campaign in 2017, we supported H&M with the Pall Mall Barbers popup where we provided barber services

  • ver an 8 week campaign

period which was hosted at The Truman Brewery. We launched Hugo Boss’ new fragrance alongside

  • GQ. Customers experienced

a multisensory, full male grooming experience sampling the fragrance rather than the normal

  • sample. We showed not only

the fragrance, but the lifestyle around it. We worked with MasterCard to provide 4000 haircuts in the main square in Cardiff over three days. Fans could either choose ‘Madness’ having portraits and flags sculpted into their hair for a chance to win tickets to the final, or ‘Priceless’ an unforgettable PMB-quality experience with all the fanfare

  • f the football. We featured

celebrity appearances from David James and Ryan Giggs and a Barbershop quartet. MasterCard won an award for the popup initiative at The Pro Awards in 2017 and were also shortlisted for an award at the Sports Business Awards. We have worked with Retail Week Live, Shoptalk and Money 2020 to deliver popups into their B2B events. Our popup acts as a networking hub where customers engage with each other and breaks up the event by adding a social dynamic into a business event which drives social media engagement and buzz. Event organisers sponsor the popup and delegates are able to receive a service of their choosing which makes the event stand out and be the most memorable B2B event of the year for delegates.

PRODUCT HERITAGE

  • 1. Idea (2009)

PMB was historically “The Pall Mall Toilet Saloon” with a range of it’s own male grooming products. Frustrated at the experience of using other brand’s products that were not matching the standard required by PMB’s team, the idea was born for PMB to return to it’s roots and relaunch it’s male grooming range.

  • 2. Development (2010)

We developed a series of unique step-by-step processes for delivering all male grooming services, based on our years of international experience and research. Our unique systems helped identify define the products that were needed to deliver superior services to our customers.

  • 3. Formulation (2012)

After extensive research, we identified the market leading manufacturer and were painstakingly detailed in working together with formulation teams to ensure that the exact product vision became a reality.

  • 4. Launch (2014)

The products had their debut in PMB stores and were met by industry awards and rave reviews from customers and barbers who were key collaborators in the product development process.

  • 5. Integration (2014)

Because the products were engineered specifically to complement the techniques and grooming services that were uniquely available in PMB stores, they became an intrinsic part of the PMB store experience from day one and form a key part of the customer experience today.
