learning standards

National Core Arts Standards

“Are there parts, large or small, of the national standards that must be adapted to better serve the students of Illinois, and if so, how?"

  • All 4 Illinoisans on the national writing team are on the Steering
  • Committee. Communicate regularly with national during our process.

Affirm – No Change:

  • Artistic Literacy
  • Artistic Processes
  • EUs / EQs

Recommend Change:

  • Anchor Standards - #3 & #8
  • H. S. Levels – Proficient/Accomplished to

Introductory/Intermediate

  • Music “Strands” – From 5 to 1

Overarching Policy Issues

SLIDE 14

National Recommended Rationale Anchor #3 -- “Refine and complete artistic work.” “Revise, refine, and complete artistic work.” VA & MA: Final stages can involve

  • revision. In VA, EU uses “revise &

refine.” Others don’t lose. Anchor #8 -- “Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.” “Construct meaningful interpretations of artistic work.” National = Intentional Fallacy. Not the goal (or ability) of arts interpretation to determine artist’s intent.

Anchor Standards – 2 Changes
