The he Cha Chall llen enge ge

To realise AI’s potential to reduce the 1.3 million annual road deaths, it is important to define a minimal acceptable performance threshold for AI deployed on our roads (self driving vehicles) and meet the public expectation that1:

  • AI never engages in careless, dangerous or reckless driving behaviour
  • AI remains aware, willing and able to avoid collisions at all times
  • AI meets, or exceeds, the performance of a competent & careful human

driver This requires testing in a wide range of real-world and virtual testing The UK has responded by establishing CAM Testbed UK. Complementary centres that provide access to: urban and trunk road networks, public and private testing, parking, data exchange, simulation, digital twins2
