GEF-6 Climate Change Mitigation Strategy

Goal: support developing countries and economies in transition toward a low-emission develop. path

CC1 – Promote Innovation, Technology Transfer and Supportive Policies and Strategies CC3 – Foster Enabling Conditions to Mainstream Mitigation into SD Strategies CC2 – Demonstrate Systematic Impacts of Mitigation Options Program 1: Promote timely development, demonstration and financing of low-carbon technologies and mitigation options Program 2: Develop and demonstrate innovative policy pack. and market initiatives to foster new range of mitig. actions Program 3: Promote integrated low-emission urban systems Program 4: Promote conservation and enhancement of carbon stocks in forest, and other land-use, and support climate smart agriculture Program 5: Integrate findings of convention obligations and enabling activities into national planning processes and mitigation targets

What can GEF fund in the waste sector

1.

Technology innovation in waste – pre-commercial demo & deployment w/ focus on technology risk reduction.

  • Countries/ sectors/ technologies with large GHG emission reductions potential
  • Collaboration w/ stakeholders

2.

National policies & mechanisms to bring (waste management) tech/ practices to scale

  • Macro-economic packages – polluter pays, carbon tax etc
  • Performance-based payments; risk mitigation;

3.

Urban systems

  • Integrated urban approaches - eg sustainable production & consumption – energy efficiency;

methane; POPs

4.

Private sector set aside: $ 110 million – approaches to attract PS funding.
