Evaluation of the Proposal and the Concept Presentation in the Master Thesis Seminar HPSTS I (10/2015)

In the Master Thesis Seminar I, the proposal of a MA thesis and the concept chosen are presented. In the Master Thesis Seminar II, the results of a MA thesis (poster and poster discussion) are presented. Agenda

  • The first proposal has to be submitted to the advisor (and the reviewers) 3 weeks before the

concept presentation! All three will then give their feedback within 2 weeks (please CC everybody). At this point, the reviewers and the advisor can refuse the assessment and / or the supervision if the proposal has failed to obtain sufficient quality.

  • If the proposal is accepted, a concept presentation takes place in the Master Thesis Seminar I

(10 min. presentation + 10 min. discussion). If possible, the reviewers and the advisor are present during the presentation. Students can use the feedback from the concept presentation for the improvement of their proposals.

  • The advisor grades the final proposal and sends a grade suggestion to the seminar facilitator

after the concept presentation. The grade suggestion of the advisor includes an assessment

  • f the correct structure and the bibliography, especially the technical aspects of the proposal

with the developed evaluation form (see below: proposal evaluation form)).

  • The grade for the seminar HPSTS I is then obtained from equal parts of the evaluation of the

proposal and the concept presentation which is assessed with the evaluation form that was developed for this purpose (see below: concept presentation evaluation form). Structure of the Proposal

  • Structure of the PROPOSAL FOR AN EMPIRICAL STUDY or secondary data analysis:
  • 3-5 pages in length (TR 12, 1.5 line spacing) including references. Contents are:
  • Name, title of the work, advisor and reviewer (if appropriate one reviewer as NN)
  • Brief Introduction and key objectives of the MA thesis
  • Relevance of the research question and theoretical background
  • Hypotheses and methods (planned sample, constructs, procedures)
  • Suggestion for data analysis
  • Schedule and references
  • PROPOSAL FOR A THEORETICAL MA THESIS: to be discussed directly with the supervisor.

Concept Presentation (also possible in MA thesis seminar II in the summer semester)

  • This will be graded by the seminar facilitator with the developed assessment check list
  • The assessment involves the quality of the presentation and the discussion

General information on the supervision of MA Thesis

  • The advisors/reviewers do not give feedback on issues which students can educate

themselves on (e.g., the formal structure of the MA thesis can be read in the guidelines)

  • Outer form and APA standards should be clearly communicated
  • We do not coach students so that they get a 1.0. The MA thesis is an exam performance in

which the students should, as independently as possible under guidance, show that they have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills for academic work.
