Research | Does the designer have a social/moral responsibility?
BBC radio 4 Woman’s Hour
Catlin Moran was asked by Jane Garvey the presenter of of the program; “Why are you so keen to be so open about your up bringing?” Her answer; “Manly when I was a girl I didn’t see anyone like me anywhere. Popular culture should be a mirror that reflects who you are, you should be able to see your self or someone like you in TV, in radio, in film, in books and magazines”. (Woman’s Hour, 2016) This is relevant because it shows the connection popular culture can have with people, which means there can easily be affects due to this connection.
The Graphic Design Reader
Introduction “in a sense, a graphic designer plumbs communications.” “a graphic designer potentially contributes to culture. ... Culture is the product of a society’s collective.” “graphic designers, serving as both primary and supporting creators, help build cultural objects” (2002, p. xiii) Here Heller talks about how graphic designers can have control over popular culture. History Lite “Students should not be encouraged to make their own Bauhaus or Dada designs … this mimicry serves no useful purpose.” “Design is only a one part surface. The other parts are the stories and contexts that derive from the cultures that produced the designs and the designers.” “History … must be about intense exploration and reflection.” (2002, p. 13) Heller describes exactly how designers might design badly. Implying that some designers maybe copy styles from past designers or design periods, he suggests that designers should consider the context of the design as this is more relevant to the practice of graphic design. This could be the source of the problem in terms of design having an affect socially. It could also be a way of solving the problem if the designer is more informed then she or he can consider the consequences more accurately. The Underground Mainstream “Commercial culture relies on the theft of intellectual property for its livelihood. Mass marketers steal ideas from visionaries, alter them slightly, if at all, then reissue them to the public as new
- products. In the process, what was once insurgent becomes a commodity.” (2002, p. 15) This
idea is important to my research because it points out that it may not be the designers fault. In addition, it shows that even thought a designer has designed with social and moral responsibility in mind their product has still been commoditized. This Is Not a Library In this chapter Heller Outlines the types of pornography and its uses on magazines. He doesn’t quite make it clear if he agrees with the use of pornographic imagery but his use of language certainly suggests that he is not happy with its place in the magazine industry. Looking back to what Garvey said about pop culture being a mirror. This is very relevant to pornographic content because viewers might try and match this content. Men and women might
- nly desire what they see in the magazines, in course creating an image of perfection that might
not be entirely realistic. (Needs more research) You’ve Got Spam Here Heller talks about (the more old fashion) use of spam emailing that now maybe more recognised as retweeting a meme. This use of sending a simple but strong, commutative image is
