  1. Enhancing Knowledge and Opportunities Derived from Utilisation of M GR from ABNJ through Open Access, Capacity Building and Inclusive Innovation Jane Collins, Harriet Harden-Davies, M arcel Jaspars, Torsten Thiele, Thomas Vanagt, Isabelle Huys 27 th June 2018 Aberdeen BBNJ Workshop Email address: jane.collins@ecoast.be

  2. How can we maximise GLOBAL P POTENTIAL from M GR from ABNJ? • M GR from ABNJ = underexplored and untapped potential • BBNJ Treaty ‘meaningful participation of those states/ stakeholders INCLUSIVE INNOVATION who may not ordinarily have the capacity to take part’

  3. M GR, including questions on the SHARING O G OF BENEFI FITS… • provides equal opportunities to access data and samples OPEN ACCESS • is needed to enable developing states to participate • provides fair opportunity and capability to work with data and samples CAP ACITY • is needed to enable developing states to participate BUILDING • potential to empower beneficiaries to generate and accrue benefits for themselves

  4. Open Access, Capacity Building and Inclusive Innovation Policy needed Benefit sharing Provisions for BBNJ Open Access & Treaty Conservation & Capacity Building sustainable use Remove potential Feedback barriers Loop Approach in practice Open Access M GR – Open up & Inclusive Innovation untapped combine Capacity Building potential resources Feedback Loop

  5. Inclusive Innovation INCLUSIVE CAP ACITY OPEN ACCESS BUILDING INNOVATION! • Remove barriers • Engagement of a greater number and diversity of people • Streamlining of local expertise into R&D, thereby fostering local needs • Self-perpetuating, feedback cycle: • would improve further utilisation of M GR through enhanced cooperation • would also promote greater benefit-sharing, leading to improved inclusive innovation

  6. Approaches for generating potential Developed states Developing states M aximum M aximum potential potential Three possible approaches for maximizing potential: Blue arrow = Restrictive utilisation Green arrow = Status quo/ without BBNJ treaty Red arrow = Open access , capacity building and Inclusive innovation

  7. Approaches for generating GLO LOBAL potential Three possible approaches for maximizing GLOBAL (developing plus developed states), cumulative potential: Blue arrow = Restrictive utilization Green arrow = Status quo/ without BBNJ treaty Global Red arrow = Open access , capacity building and Inclusive innovation M aximum potential

  8. Conclusion Generating Capacity Inclusive M aximum Benefits For All Open Access Building Innovation Potential ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’ Taking this into consideration during ILBI negotiations would: • enable all to profit from benefit sharing opportunities • maximize knowledge and opportunities • promote conservation and sustainable use of BBNJ • Facilitate involvement in inclusive innovation
