Vera Newman Rule Endowed Memorial Scholarship

One substantial monetary award will be given to an outstanding student with the highest GPA. Selected by the Department Head in consultation with the Graduate Studies Committee. No applications accepted.

Charles M. and Pamela S. Sphar Endowed Scholarship

A $400 award for an outstanding female English Department graduate student with a GPA of 3.0 or better in need of fjnancial assistance. Financial need is established through the Financial Aid Offjce. Selected by the Department Head in consultation with the Graduate Studies Committee.

Sutherland-McManus Awards

Two $250 awards given annually to graduate students who have written for an English class either 1) the best literary critical essay,

  • r 2) the best work of nonfjction prose (including essays, reports,

and electronic documents). Selecte by the Graduate Studies Committee.

Emerson Award

Recognizes outstanding writing by graduate students in English. One Sutherland-McManus award-winning selection will be cited as the Emerson Award recipient. Selected by the Graduate Studies Committee.

Study language, literature, and culture from traditional as well as emerging scholarly perspectives through both undergraduate and graduate programs. The Frank Waters Fiction Lectureships

$1000, $750, and $250 awards for three outstandin graduate student fjction writers currently enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing program. Selected by the Creative Writing faculty. The deadling for this award is October 17, 2005.

Keith Wilson/Joe Somoza Poetry Prize

In honor of retired NMSU facult members Keith Wilson and Joe Somoza, $700, $200, and $100 awards for three outstanding graduate student poets currently enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing program. Selected by the Creative Writing faculty. The deadline for this award is October 17, 2005.

Ruth Scott Academy of American Poets Prize

A $100 award for an outstanding graduate student poet currently enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing program. Selected by the Creative Writing faculty. The deadling for this award is October 17, 2005.

Harris-Kunz Endowed Award in Poetry

A $350 award for a graduate student poet currently enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing program who is completin a thesis and graduating within 12 months of the award. Selected by the Creative Writing Faculty.

Marion P. Hardman Endowed Memorial Scholarship

A $650 award given annually to an outstanding junior or senior majoring in English. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.

Mary Powell Ambrose Endowed Memorial Award

A $500 award given annually to an outstanding junior or senior majoring in English. Selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.

Joseph H. Forsyth Endowed Memorial Scholarship

A $350 award given annually to one or more juniors majoring in English, New Mexico natives, who have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or

  • better. Selected by Dr. Jane Allen and the Department Head.
  • Dr. Larry L. Wilson Endowed Memorial Scholarship

A $600 award given annually to a New Mexico resident majoring in English, who has maintained a GPA above a 3.0 and who demonstrates need, but is not eligible for fjnancial aid. Preference will be given to a returning student. Selected by the Department Head and the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Develop writing abilities in general composition, technical and business communication, and creative writing (fjction, poetry, and drama). Robert A. Wichert Endowed Memorial Award for Creative Writing

Two $300 awards given annually to the undergraduate students who have written the best fjction, poetry, or drama in an English class. Selected by the Creative Writing faculty.

Corrine Robinson Peterson Creative Writing Scholarship

A $200 awared given annually to a U.S. citizen with a GPA above 3.0 who is taking a creative writing course in the English Department. Nominations accepted from Creative Writing Faculty. Selected by the Creative Writing Faculty.
