Search Process ●●●
Search initiation and site visit
Critical in executive search is thoroughly understanding the position and the culture of the
- rganization in which the new executive will work. This understanding goes beyond just
reviewing the position description. It is imperative to obtain a thorough comprehension of the position goals, key result objectives and what personal attributes and specific managerial and leadership characteristics the new executive needs to have that will foster success. Every
- rganization is unique and has distinct idiosyncrasies. It is important to understand and to relate
to all of this throughout the entire search process. This will insure carefully screened candidates possess the highest degree of compatibility to appropriately align to the culture and the
- rganizational setting. A site visit to meet key executives in the organization and to observe the
setting the executive would work in would be scheduled as early as possible as the search is initiated.
- T. Pratt & Associates, Ltd. takes great interest in doing the homework on the front end of the
executive search to insure success throughout all phases of the recruitment. Every attempt is made to develop a relationship that builds credibility, integrity and trust. The goal is a long-term fit with the executive identified as the candidate of choice. These key steps outline the beginning stages of the search:
- 1. Request for organizational information (i.e. organizational charts, collateral material,
statistics and performance achievements, financial data, annual reports, etc.)
- 2. Site visit to meet key decision makers and tour facilities.
SLIDE 6
4
- 3. A written report after the site visit offering insights and findings. This confirms areas of
concern and consensus and allows for open discussion to make sure all parties are focused and in agreement.
Position Profile
From the site visit and the organizational information provided, a detailed position profile document is developed. The profile serves to confirm that all stakeholders and parties are in alignment as the search moves forward, but it also works as a recruitment tool to candidates expressing interest in the position. This position profile document outlines key result objectives, the challenge to the position and why it would be attractive to consider, organizational charts and other pertinent information that will help interested executives to better understand the
- pportunity. After reviewing the position profile, candidates are considered for more in-depth
evaluation.
Target list and search strategy
A search strategy outlines where the search will focus to recruit specific candidates. The strategy describes the type of executive that will be identified and the targeted organizations to be recruited out of. The strategy is discussed and agreed upon to assure that all parties are in concert as the recruitment process initiates.
Timeline
A timeline is prepared to complete the search and to indicate week-to-week deliverables and targets to keep the search on track and to meet an agreed upon search conclusion target date.
References and background verification
In-depth referencing is conducted at all stages of the recruitment process. Direct and indirect referencing is conducted to obtain objective feedback from those that intimately know the
- candidate. Any candidate under serious consideration will be explored to understand past
performance, effectiveness at the senior level role, creativity, vision, and leadership style and
- abilities. There is also a critical assessment of past organizational settings compared to the
client’s to ascertain compatibility. Verification of credentials and background checks include employment, educational, credit, criminal, and licenses. The references are reported verbally and in writing. Where there are areas of concern, additional probing and investigation will be conducted before a final offer is presented.
Communication
Critical to the search is superior communications. The preference and frequency of communication is discussed at the search initiation. Typically, weekly phone meetings are arranged to discuss search progress, candidates who have entered into consideration, and any challenges encountered after the search initiates. A candidate matrix and written reports serve as reference tools for executives who have been presented for consideration to keep stakeholders, search committees, and board of director members up to speed.
SLIDE 7
5
Interviewing and assessment
This complex process of assessing candidates includes the evaluation of key personal attributes along with pertinent experience and qualifications that match the position description and the
- rganizational setting. Written reports and assessments are provided to give useful feedback on
the ongoing evaluation. Initial phone meetings that explore experience, expectations, compensation, and relocation flexibility help to screen in (or out) those that initially express
- interest. After careful review, and with permission, those candidates who meet the expectations
- f the position criteria are personally interviewed.
Search coordination
- T. Pratt & Associates, Ltd. takes a proactive approach to managing each and every aspect of the
search to ensure success at each stage. A designated lead person in the client organization is selected to help facilitate good communication at all phases of the search and acts as the key contact.
Offer coordination
It is the goal at this juncture of the search to assure that every detail and consideration is given to the recruitment of the final candidate slate. Key to this is to reduce or eliminate ambiguity with these candidates all the while working in the client’s best interests. It is important to understand your view and wishes as it relates to compensation, relocation, family issues, benefits and special considerations (i.e. employee non-competes, severance terms). As well it is important to understand issues important to the final candidate and his/her family to communicate appropriately so to prepare an offer that is acceptable to everyone.

Testimonials ●●●
“Tyler has worked with me on several searches over the years. Most recently he helped the health insurance company that my System is a part owner in recruit an excellent CEO. As always, Tyler did very thorough and conscientious work and delivered excellent results.” John Goodnow, CEO, Benefis Healthcare “As a healthcare professional, I have known and worked with Tyler Pratt on numerous occasions to fill key leadership positions. I find his listening skills to be outstanding and a key reason for his successful match of client with candidates. He learns to know about the people he works with, not the resume alone. He is a true professional with a keen acumen for the business and he demonstrates sensitivity, dignity, and grace in performing assignments on behalf of his clients.”
- R. Lyle Luman, Chief Executive Officer, Santa Barbara Regional Health Authority
“Tyler has always been a very conscientious and caring professional who does not lose sight of the needs and desires of the individual and the organization. He is a person who you feel comfortable working with for the long term. He establishes a successful track record with you that automatically place him at the top when considering employment/placement positions.” Mike Elliot, former CEO, United HealthCare “Tyler really strives to know you as a person, to stay in touch, to know your organization and to create the right matches. He has done very good work in helping to find executive leaders for me and I have also been part of searches that he has conducted for other organizations where I became a candidate. I have seen the quality of how he works on both ends and he is consistently a class act. I have a lot of confidence in his work, his knowledge of healthcare and most importantly his knowledge of people, because that's the most important element of success." David Kibbe, CEO, New West Health Services “I have had the pleasure of working with Tyler on several searches to fill executive level positions. Tyler is professional, responsive and well connected in the health care arena. Candidates who have been hired through his efforts had the required experience and background and were also good cultural fits within the organization. If you are looking for an executive search consultant to help meet your executive recruitment needs, I would strongly suggest that you give Tyler a call.” Diana Kimbrough, Former Regional Director, Human Resources Providence Health Systems “I first met Tyler when I was a candidate for Chief Medical Officer at a New England-based health
- plan. Tyler treated me with respect and was incredibly thorough in keeping me up to date on the
search progress. He was unfailingly thoughtful, courteous, and a straight shooter. While representing his client of course, I always felt that Tyler was interested in me as well. The position was offered to me and I went on to accept it, in part based on how Tyler effectively and honestly represented his client, as well as how he treated me. At the same time I was hired as CMO, Tyler simultaneously conducted a search for another senior executive at our plan, and brought to us one month after I was hired a highly competent colleague who was just the right fit for us.
SLIDE 14
12 I subsequently moved from CMO to CEO and engaged Tyler on two vice-presidential searches for
- us. He brought my team and I a robust slate of candidates after completing due diligence with our
senior leadership team on the kind of person who would make the most sense for us. He was thorough and dependable throughout and I was able to make offers to individuals for both of these positions who were of the highest quality. Having worked with Tyler on both sides of the table, he is definitely the total package in health care executive recruitment.” Allan Kornberg MD, Former CEO, Network Health “As you know, we faced some unique market challenges (Kaiser – Georgia Region) to overcome as we began these searches, including a three-year history of revenue and membership reduction and lack of some industry standard products and services. In the face of these challenges and very exacting hiring qualifications and expectations, you delivered on both positions with qualified, experienced and extremely effective personnel. The two selected candidates are still with the
- company. In fact, one has been promoted to Region Vice President. They both were instrumental
in the company’s revenue turnaround to a position of positive growth in their first two years on the job. I’d like to additionally commend you for exhibiting a sense of ownership for the positions. You conducted the first interviews as if you were the hiring officer, and provided valuable feedback to the candidates and me throughout the process. At no time was I presented with unqualified candidates, and your feedback helped us adjust the qualifications and targeting for one of the positions to our benefit. Tyler, I would recommend you without hesitation to other employers in need of professional recruitment services. Please feel free to share my comments or phone number with prospective clients.” Andrew Weintraub, Chief Development Officer, KePRO/HealthQuest
