There are an estimated 285 million people living with sight loss world wide.

Sadly the consequences of sight loss are all to often isolation, poverty and depression.

Of the estimated 2 million vision impaired people in the UK, almost half say they would like to leave their home more often.

With the value of the 'Purple Pound' currently estimated at over £200bn per year, there is much incentive for businesses to do more to secure the loyalties of disabled customers.

Planning a route and waypoints

We define test routes for our participants at the
 station based on a site visit and station plans. We identified the significant waypoints where
 users needed to be instructed.

Initial installation of beacons

We consider beacon positioning and orientation. We also test out the turnaround time for beacon installation by the installation team.

Intermediate feedback is helpful This feedback reassures users that they are on the right track, e.g. “you are half-way there”

Use sound to attract attention

Having a sound before any instruction grabs user’s attention and alerts them that a new instruction is coming up.

Provide reassurance not distance information

Some vision impaired people may not easily relate to distance information given in feet or metres.

@WayfindrStd • #Wayfindr
slide-26
SLIDE 26

Use simple and concise messages

The “less is more” principle applies when designing audio instructions for vision impaired people. Vision impaired people do not like long or very detailed instructions due to the time required to think about and process the information.
