His istory y of Dyin ing Matter ers Launched in 2009, Dying Matters has been part of Hospice UK since July 2017. Aim: raise public awareness about the importance of talking openly about dying, death and grief and of making your wishes known. It has 5 asks:
- Plan your funeral
- Write your will
- Decide on organ donation
- Plan your future care
- Write this all down, and tell others where to find it
The Dying Matters campaign currently has around 12k supporters. The following organisations have all partnered with the campaign:
Dyin ing Matters rs Awaren eness ess Week 2020
This year’s Dying Matters Awareness Week takes place from 11- 17 May 2020 with the theme of Dying to be Heard. There are materials to encourage people to think about what they can do for themselves, their family and friends and in their community. Each day will have a specific theme that will be discussed on social media. There is now a permanent Awareness Week hub on the Dying Matters website, offering practical tips and inspirational ideas for running events.
COVID-19 is going to mean some people dying before their time, or some of us not being able to visit someone for a last
- time. It's going to affect us in ways we're only just starting to
- understand. To acknowledge this, Dying Matters have
launched the #Before reThe TheirT irTim ime campaign. This is so people can share their experiences and talk through concerns in this difficult time. You can use the sunflower emoji on your phone if you are posting messages from there or want to send messages of solidarity. Follow along and contribute on social media.
Six new leaflets for 2020 ready for you to download and print yourself. We also have them in print ready versions if you want to take them to a professional printers. We also have a choice of “empty-belly” posters for you to use to promote your event.
Ideas for events could include:
- Death Café
- Grave Talk
- Photography competition/exhibit
- Putting on a play
- Information stand
- Talks
- Death Boards (collages of what you want your funeral to look like)
- Compiling a funeral playlist
- Decorating a coffin
We understand that due to Covid-19, events for this years Dying Matters Awareness Week will be cancelled. However, there are many things you could host online, such as a Death Café
- r a talk or you could even create an
- nline gallery or playlist.

The #IRemember campaign ran for the first time in October
- 2019. The idea was to honour the real meaning of Hallowe’en
- r the Mexican holiday of Day of the Dead, by sharing
memories and photos of dead family and friends. The hashtag was used 928 times on Twitter from 478 accounts. There are plans to run it again in 2020.
