D.A.C.A: Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

Passed in 2012 (House 224-221) Eligibility:

  • Under the age of 31
  • Been in the US since 2007 and were under the age of 16
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or more than three misdemeanors
  • Must submit Biometrics
  • $465 application fee

Benefits:

  • Defer deportation for two years
  • Eligible to receive federal financial aid for college
  • Work permits
  • Can travel abroad by completing another form and paying fee

D.A.C.A: Results

As of December 2016:

  • 94.2% of applications have been

accepted

  • Average wait time is 18 months
  • 25% of Dreamers reside in California
  • Top countries of origin: Mexico, El

Salvador, Guatemala

  • 70% have citizen family members
  • >50% have parents that did not

complete high school

  • 43% have health care compared to

31% without DACA

D.A.C.A: Effects

Education:

  • 87% had enrolled in a postsecondary institution
  • 78% reported DACA made it easier to afford school

Employment:

  • 96% have a driver’s license; also higher rates for a bank account
  • In a survey, 84% of immigrants with DACA had a job compared to 64%

without it

  • DACA recipients earn $11.47 an hour compared to $9.53
  • 65% reported a general improvement in their household economic situation

D.A.C.A: Human Impact

Empathy:

  • ~3,000 Dreamers were able to leave the country
  • 84% felt more freedom
  • 78% were less afraid of deportation
  • 72% felt a greater sense of belonging
  • Only 9% of DACA recipients reported feeling anxiety about being arrested

compared to 40% of all undocumented immigrants in a survey
