dialogue about some topic, share beliefs, points of view, pictures, video, etc. usually in some formally organized online community like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

approximately 10 years ago when social media arrived. That is mainly due to technology, more specifically, because of social networking and social media.

In the state of Mississippi, it is a FELONY to use e-mail or electronic communication to:
- Threaten bodily harm to a person or to threaten to harm a person’s family or
property
- Communicate REPEATEDLY in order to threaten, terrify, or harass a
person
- Make false statements concerning death, injury, illness, criminal conduct or
indecent conduct.

- Keep PERSONAL information PRIVATE.
- Keep a HARD COPY of any emails, instant messages, texts, or
communications of harassment for evidence.
- REPORT the person to parents, administrators, and authorities.
- DO NOT retaliate, and DO NOT respond to attacks except to calmly
request the perpetrator to stop the attack.
- Discourage cyberbullying or attacks on others.

SLIDE 20 Cyberbullying Cases
- According to an article published in the Sun Herald on September 25, 2013, a 13
year old Waveland girl was arrested on a felony charge under the state’s cyberbullying law after police found evidence that the young girl used a cellphone to send out indecent pictures of another 13 year old girl against her wishes.
- The police also arrested the 13 year old girl’s mother on misdemeanor charges (one
count of contributing to the delinquency of a child and contributing to the neglect
- f a child) that allege that she was aware of the situation and failed to take action to
deal with the situation.
- According to the article, an unknown person instigated the situation through
sextortion.
