Press Release - HELP Academy, Malaysia

The Dean’s Award is conferred to the deserving individuals whose first and second year achievements and activities are resonant with the core values of the university. The ceremony… was witnessed by University of Derby’s International Partnerships Manager, Ms Gail Thrippleton… Mr. Brian Wilkinson, the Relationship Manager and CMI representative. Ms Gail Thrippleton said that employers in the UK are looking for graduates who are work-ready and possess the much needed attributes and skills….UK employers.. instead of looking for a person who only have an impressive academic qualifications, they prefer someone who possess the right confidence to function well at their job.

  • Mr. Brian Wilkinson added that receiving the Dean’s Award would definitely

boost a student’s prospects of securing a better job, besides completing a university degree.

I think this challenge has sharpened not only our leadership skill, but also other soft skills such as teamwork, problem solving skill, decision making skill as well as critical and creative thinking skills. These soft skills play vital role in demonstrating graduate employability as soft skills have become the top differentiator for job applicants nowadays according to the news

  • report. Besides that, I learnt how to think out of the box with the help of technology

advancement and digital culture. This challenge has promoted the role of social media such as Snapchat in the effort of addressing the management issue… This kind of thinking is crucial due to the increased level of competitiveness in the business environment and by enhancing on that, it could make us stand out from the crowd.

Partner Feedback

“ The CMI competition with teams of students, from places as far away as Singapore, during the Summer School in Derby provided a unique

and work ethic against a much more demanding international set up. It was once in a life time opportunity and it functioned as calibration benchmark of the level of knowledge and commitment needed in the international business world.”

Employer Feedback

Steve Tonks, Managing Director, Unipart Rail, Asia Pacific commented "The international Summer School Challenge held by the University of Derby was insightful and very appropriate in a modern business environment which really stretched the thinking of students. I was extremely impressed how students approached the challenge and the professionalism in which they researched and presented their proposals”.

Thank you to you and all your team for running such a great event…. The standard across all the teams was high and personally I took a number of things away from the day (including the Q&A huddle!)… at events such as this the term “they are all winners” is often overused. However post event looking at how the students got together for photos with great pride suggests this is one occasion where we can legitimately use this term. We look forward to continuing to develop our fantastic partnership. Best regards Keith & the CMI team

Reflections

We have learned and continue to learn from each other in terms of best practice. This close working relationship between the UoD and CMI has resulted in mutual benefits for the CMI, the UoD, the UoD partner institutions and the Derby and collaborative students. Are apprenticeships that different? Are they not an exemplification of what we should be doing?

slide-127
SLIDE 127

Things to think about:

  • As the provider, are you adapting to the work

patterns of the client organisation?

  • Are you agile in your approach to teaching a

large, closed group with significant management experience and variable levels of academic achievement?

slide-128
SLIDE 128

Beware the use of these words:

  • Apprenticeship/apprentices
  • 20%
  • Term time
  • Undergraduate
slide-129
SLIDE 129

What helps:

  • Demonstrating the alignment with the client’s

strategy and objectives

  • Making the Finance Director happy by recouping

the levy

  • Showing the HR Director how it helps support

attraction and retention

  • Working in partnership

CQC – “Outstanding”

“The trust had recently contracted with Henley Business School to provide places on the BA Chartered Managers degree. Applications were encouraged from all staff and 45 staff had started

  • n this course, from a wide variety of placements.

The application process was open and transparent, and not closed to professional boundaries or specific occupational bandings.”
