Ambatovy Project Overview

Project Name: Ambatovy (Process Plant) Location: Tamatave, Madagascar Project duration: 26 months (July 2009 – September 2011) B&W contract value: US$ 60 million

  • After the successful completion of the Early Works contract on the same project, B&W was appointed as the main Electrical &

Instrumentation installation contractor on one of the largest projects in the world at the time.

  • The plant is designed to produce 50t of nickel, 5t of cobalt and 130t of ammonium phosphate. Although the plant is constructed in

Tamatave, near the harbour, the mine is situated near the town of Muramanga, some 450km away.

  • The scope of work included the entire electrical and instrumentation installation, including calibration and cold commissioning, on the

plant site, with the exception of the Refinery, Power Generation Plant, Acid Plant and Lime handling sections, which were separate

  • packages. The enormous scope of work, and limited time for completion, make the project one of, if not the biggest E&I project

undertaken by a South African contractor.

  • The scope for included everything from the 11kV and 6.6kV distribution, plant wide, to the lighting and small power, calibration of

instruments, LV and instrumentation installations and cold commissioning, while the Early Works contract included the design, supply and installation of 11kV overhead lines, distribution and street lighting on the plant site and 6.6kV overhead lines, distribution and street lighting at the mine site.

  • 900,000m of electrical cabling
  • 490,000m of instrument cabling
  • 49,000m of straight cable racking plus 4,950 fittings
  • 25,000m of stainless steel instrument tubing
  • 395t of sundry steelwork & angle droppers
  • 30,000m of single unistrut supports
  • 1,100 drives
  • 3,455 instruments
  • 1,950 luminaries
  • 4,880,785 man‐hours – all without lost time injury (5,232,096 including the Early Works)
  • A peak of 1,656 personnel on site
  • The final value of the contract was roughly R430 million and being that the bulk of the materials, including the equipment, cable,

racking, luminaries, instruments and even the cable glands were free‐issue by the client; this understates the magnitude of the work completed.

  • On site, B&W had a peak of 628 expatriates (mainly South African) and employed a peak of 1,028 local Malagasy workers. Due to local

content requirements, B&W established the subsidiary, B&W Madagascar SaRl, in Madagascar for the execution of the contract.
