Calgary Transit…

Provide over 600,000 trips a day on Bus and Light Rail

Fleet

222 Light Rail Vehicles 750 40’ Buses 93 60’ Buses 170 30’ Shuttle buses >100 Auxiliary vehicles Largest single consumer of Diesel fuel in the City 28,000,000L = 74 million tonnes CO2 per year

Current Problem…

Diesel! Incredibly energy dense fuel source but… 74 million tonnes of CO2 per year - 500,000 acres of forest Price instability – 1c variation in price = $250,000 in annual budget Increasing maintenance costs – EPA requirements, DPF issues etc.

What helped…. Technology No Issue with fuel or engine Fuel Costs Long Term contracts on offer Maintenance No surprises Operators No issues (but lots of communications) Customers No Issues – quieter vehicle appreciated by non-riders Environmental At least as good as Clean Diesel (2023 compliant already) No Issues!!!

The Options…. Hybrids

  • Diesel/Electric, Series/Parallel etc.

Gasoline

  • For the right size vehicle

Electric

  • Long Range / Short Range

Renewable Diesel

  • Biomass etc.

Hydrogen

  • Fuel Cell (Ballard)

LNG

  • Not really considered for return to base fuelling

The Issues…. CNG

  • Infrastructure

Hybrids

  • Have not delivered

Gasoline

  • Torque and performance

Electric

  • Infrastructure & what does the energy chain look like?

Renewable Diesel

  • looking at it!

Hydrogen

  • new but promising – use CNG to generate Hydrogen

Where do our environmental responsibilities lie? Locally? Provincially? Nationally?

CT approach is one of balance

  • Long term viability of diesel?
  • Single solution is unlikely today
  • Fuel diversification added expense but protects against market
  • Right vehicle for the right role is key for environmental and efficient progress
