From Regulation to Review……..and Beyond

Linda Arnold-Stratford Legal Deposit Libraries Liaison manager

BIC Breakfast October 2016

Where has NPLD come from?

The legal deposit act 2003 includes non-print works Ten years later in April 2013 the regulations come into force

slide-10
SLIDE 10
slide-11
SLIDE 11

What have we achieved so far?

Legal deposit for print has been in force for

  • ver 400 years, we still have problems

collecting and processing that material. In just 3 years we have achieved access to content which can be very complex, be in diverse formats and is forever changing.

Metadata, Access and Printing

Metadata can be harvested from the BL by all legal deposit Libraries. Each LDL now has the ability to access eJournals, eBooks and Web Archive. Currently different levels of access and printing is available across the LDLs dependent upon local infrastructure.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

What next?

Non-standard formats. Including digital mapping and born digital sheet music; emerging formats

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Digital Mapping

Currently only collecting about 10% of the known universe for digital maps. Plan to use existing access methods but expand to include

  • ther mapping formats.

Can cope with the standard formats.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Born Digital Sheet Music

More complex than digital maps since we don’t already have a platform. Engagement with the publishers is good although many didn’t know they were liable.

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Emerging formats

This is both the known Universe and the unknown. These publication formats may be transient and complex in nature At high risk of falling into the black hole.

Review of the Regulations

slide-21

To conclude:

Lets celebrate what we have achieved so far and plan for a future we know and a future we have not yet envisaged.
