20 point Major Grade ~ See Assigned Dates Below

Your job is to have a conversation, and to let the class in on it.

50%: Fishbowl Conversation (video of sample Fishbowl Conversation available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN9tw6l-A0E; rubric will be posted).  First 25 minutes belong to the group. Group members discuss a philosophical point, thesis, or other binding idea. Group members reference their texts specifically, but they do not summarize the texts; the discussion is focused on the thesis idea. Group members receive two grades for this component:

  • 25 points: Group
  • must focus on a particular issue, and stay focused.
  • Conversation should flow, not lag with awkward pauses.
  • 25 points: Individuals (each student gets a different grade here)
  • must speak authoritatively and fully;
  • must be experts on their book and on how that book contributes to

understanding of the idea;

  • must neither shrink nor dominate.

 After 25 minutes, others join in. Class members, one at the time, “tap in” to connect their book to the conversation. This goes for a daily grade. 50%: Group Presentation Packet  10 points: Group Statement summarizing point(s) the discussion will explore.  10 points: Average of all group members’ individual documents (below).  30 points: Individual Student’s Document. Each student must contribute a document to the Group Presentation Packet. This document must contain:

  • Bibliographical entry on the book.
  • Précis of the book.
  • +/- 100 words summarizing the book’s connection to group thesis
  • At least one quoted passage (with citation) which illustrates this connection
  • At least one other quoted passage (with citation)
