Māori in the Eastern & Central Region • Māori are tangata whenua in Aotearoa. • 25% of our region are Māori . • 35% of Māori are under 25. • The median income for Maori is $25, 725. • Treaty Deeds of Settlement have been signed with iwi in large parts of the ECCT region. • Māori is a focus area in the ECCT funding strategy. • The Māori Strategy will have a two pronged approach: • Internal focus • External focus 15

Our Māori Strategy Two Pronged approach: Internal focus: • Internal review: What resources and knowledge are already in place. • Staff & Trustee survey: Identifying areas to develop and focus on improving ourselves first. Adopt and maintain policy, internal practices like karakia, use of Te Reo and waiata. • Understanding the Treaty of Waitangi and it’s principles. External focus: • Understanding Māori needs in our rohe • Engaging and collaborating with Māori • Building sustainable relationships with Māori • Increasing positive outcomes for Maori that benefit the community 17
