“Welcome to all of our new Year 7 students, and their

  • parents. It is a privilege to be the Head Teacher of this

very special school and one of the highlights for me each year is meeting you all in person from

  • September. I know that you will share our high

aspirations and hopes for your time with us. We have a strong family ethos with a secure environment in which our young people flourish and

  • excel. You will be joining a wonderfully diverse

community with students and families drawn from a wide range of backgrounds and geographical areas. I, along with all of my colleagues, can’t wait to welcome you properly in September when you start your adventure with us.” - Mrs Cassidy

What makes a Successful Transition?

slide-5
SLIDE 5

Wh What makes es a Succe ccess ssful Transit ition?

When a child feels…

  • Well prepared
  • Confident
  • Happy

And is making…

  • New friends
  • Good progress
  • Positive contributions

This is what we are all working towards

7A 2019

slide-6
SLIDE 6
  • It’s a big step for all children
  • Some take the step with more confidence than
  • thers
  • They are asked to use skills and make decisions

that they have had little experience of before

  • The majority of children will cope well
  • We recognise that some children need more

support and guidance. This is often to help students with processes of metacognition

How big is the step?

Crossley Heath Transition Challenges

  • High achievers meet more high achievers…
  • More academic challenge (things might not come so easily)…
  • Higher frequency of homework…
  • Increased level of personal responsibility…
  • Increased need for effective organisational skills…
  • Everything on a bigger scale…

Communication is key to addressing any difficulties at the earliest stage. We like to work with parents and carers to create a ‘Team Around The Child’ (TAC)

My role as Key Stage 3 Pastoral Leader – Mrs Griggs

My name is Mrs Griggs and I am the KS3 Pastoral Leader. I work alongside the Progress Leaders for Y7 and Y8. I have worked at Crossley Heath for the past 8 years. My roll involves supporting you with your well-being, punctuality, attendance and behaviour, and to help ensure that transition from Y6 to Y7 is a positive one. I am passionate about providing support and wellbeing at school to help you develop socially, emotionally and academically. I believe every child should feel safe and happy in school and it is my role to provide you with the opportunities, experiences, knowledge, care and support to achieve this. When I’m not at school I love spending time with my 3 children and granddaughter, going on family days

  • ut and making treasured memories for them. I also love watching and supporting my favourite football

team Tottenham – “Come on the Spurs”!. I am really looking forward to meeting you all in September. Have a good summer and take care. Mrs Griggs

slide-14
SLIDE 14

My role as Y7 Progress Leader – Mr Davis

I would usually be giving you this information face to face during our transition events and it feels very strange that I can’t do that this term. The Transition Day and Information Evening are real highlights of

  • ur school year and we all share the disappointment that these events can’t go ahead. We’ll make up for

that in September! For now I would encourage you to keep checking the transition pages of our website for more updates and student information https://www.crossleyheath.org.uk/transition-to-year7/ My role as Progress Leader is to work alongside students, parents/carers, tutors and other members of the Pastoral Team to oversee our students’ positive development. Our main priority is to ensure that our students are happy and feel secure in their transition from their primary schools. Their physical and emotional wellbeing is paramount. I also monitor academic progress across the year group and work with subject staff to help address any areas of need. I am eager to promote the high standards and expectations we have as an outstanding school and also encourage all of our students to participate in the wider opportunities we have available here at Crossley Heath. My pastoral philosophy has always been to work with parents/carers and other supporting adults to create a ‘team around the child’ that can pull together to allow our students to grow to be confident, happy learners that can make the most of their potential.

Hello everybody! There is my mug shot… apologies. If I knew how often this picture would be used, I may have brushed my teeth and moisturised beforehand. I am very proud to be a part

  • f Crossley Heath and be the Assistant Head of this school. It is genuinely one of the best

schools in the country. I really want your children, our children now, to love their time here, we want them to love Crossley Heath - forever! To develop a life long affinity with the school. Yes, it is about academic success, being able to have the qualifications and knowledge to move to their next stage with confidence but it is also about building character and providing opportunities for growth. Fundamentally it is about working together so that our children grow into young people that are in charge of their own destinies and can make a difference to the world. In the meantime we want them to make a positive difference to their school.

‘SCHOOL VALUES AND CHARCATER’

Our school values are meaningful. They are central to the young people we wish to help to develop. We want all our students to contribute positively to their school and communities. Of course each child is an individual and school values can be shown in many ways. But here are some examples of how our values can be seen in the characteristics of our students…

slide-20
SLIDE 20

‘SCHOOL VALUES AND CHARCATER’

SCHOOL VALUE ASSOCIATED CROSSLEY HEATH CHARACTER SELF-BELIEF Does the student have a growth mindset? Are they self-aware and reflective? Do they show confidence – including quiet confidence RESPECT Do they embrace school rules? Do they display positive manners? Do they look after our environment? Are they honest, even in difficult times? Do they show kindness and compassion? PURPOSE Are they organised and prepared for the day? Do they complete work to the best of their ability? Are they self-motivated? RESPONSIBILITY Do they take responsibility for their own actions and outcomes? Are they an active team player? Do they support their house? Are they self-disciplined? CHALLENGE Do they aim for their honest best in all that they do? Do they show resilience? Do they aim to have a positive impact on the school and their community? ASPIRATION Do they set high targets and goals? Are they ambitious for their future in whatever form that takes? Do they make an effort to understand their future options and pathways?

slide-21
SLIDE 21

The developing of ‘Crossley Heath Character’ comes from all aspects of school life and our curriculum offering including our out of school activities, extracurricular offerings pshe/sre, outside speakers, student leadership

  • pportunities, school council, house activities, Duke of Edinburgh, National Citizenship Scheme, careers

education, sports teams, academic competitions, school trips, commitments and the involvement in our

  • utside community.

The tutorial programme is an important part of our ‘taught’ education offering to our students. It reinforces school values, is thought provoking and aids the building of 'Crossley Heath Character'. That our young perople can go on to live successful, happy, flourished and fulfilled lives. crossley heath character education is about acting through our values, about developing a good 'moral' sense and developing practical wisdom in the differing circumstances of our students lives. it is about informed action, relflection, personal and practical experience and fundementally growth It is to help our students prepare for the 'test of life' Assemblies support our tutorials and PSHE/SRE by focusing on topical issues. This allows relevant and up to date issues to be aired in the short time we have for assemblies. Assemblies also reinforce our school values and celebrates the achievements of our students.

Ok – my more serious bit. Our agreement w ith you as parents/carers How can you help us to help you child be successful and grow into the characters that make an impact. Firstly I have never met an 11 year old that has not been brilliant and aw esome in their ow n unique w ay. Whatever that may be. Your children are brilliant – I can say that confidently w ithout know ing them. I also know that for success in life, academic and otherw ise, the roots and support that parents/carers give are

  • fundamental. It is absolutely essential that w

e w

  • rk together, but also that school is supported. Without your

support w e can not help your child to reach their potential. This is in terms of academia and also character. I said I have never met an 11 year that has not been brilliant. That can be said also for a 16 year old. But I have rarely met a 16 year that has never made a mistake, an error in judgement. Your children are going to grow into young adults here, the teenage years are not easy, for them or for parents/carers. Children make mistakes, it is just important that they learn from them. Here w e have trained and experienced teachers and pastoral staff. I am asking for your trust and support of all our policies, even w hen that means sanctions (as part of a learning process) are imposed. It is essential that w e have your full support, not only by trusting

  • ur expert teachers to do their professional job for w

hich they are w ell trained, experienced and supported to do, but also outside the classroom in terms of pastoral support and behaviour. Our policies are fair and w ell balanced, but w e do have very high expectations of conduct. We believe that a firm, fair but forgiving approach to sanctions allow s children to take responsibility for their

  • w

n actions; This is tough at times – its tough love. Please read our policies and if you feel that you can not support them fully, then that is ok, but this is not the school for your child. The home-school agreement w ill come home w ith your child and it is essential that all parties agree to do their bit, w e find that our happiest and most successful students are those w here their parents/carers trust and support the school including w hen sanctions are given.

  • To ensure that my child arrives at school in full school uniform with an appearance in accordance

with school guidelines, and correctly equipped for the school day including an appropriate PE kit.

  • To read and sign my child’s planner weekly, check comments and make contact with staff where

Uniform

We expect that all students will wear their uniform smartly and to abide by our uniform rules. We want all our students to feel comfortable but we also have high expectations of what we consider to be appropriate and smart appearance for Crossley Heath students. Our students are expected to achieve standards of excellence in all aspects of school life, and wearing the correct uniform smartly not only signals a readiness to work and learn, but also a desire to share the values that the school promotes. We want to have the right balance between our community identity and individual expression. Whilst we understand that not everyone will agree with every aspect, we are grateful in advance for parental and student support for this policy. Uniform guidelines for boys / girls has been included in the parent pack. Information about our school uniform stockists has already been sent out to parents and carers. This information can also be found on our website in the ‘Parent/Carer Pack’ and is also available on the school website.

Celebration And Rewards

slide-30
SLIDE 30

The real reward for doing the right thing, putting the effort in and getting involved in all of school life are higher grades and a brighter future. But what about the in between. I am a big believer in intrinsic motivation and rewards – setting your own target and goals and working for achievement rather than monetary gain. However we recognise that short term rewards and acknowledgement of success are important in developing self- esteem and confidence and should be actively recognised and celebrated. We have a merits system in school where students will pick up reward for good attendance, giving good effort in their work, upholding the school values, representing their house or whole school and other positive contributions. We also have a Star of Week system where the deserving person can win the hottest ticket in town… An early lunch pass!

Mo Mobile ile phones

We understand the need and desire for you to be able to contact your child when they are travelling to and from school which is why we do not place a blanket ban on mobile phones. Not every child has a smart phone, nor are they necessary. Phones must be switched off during lesson time and we encourage our students to only use their phones in social times where it cannot be helped. We aim to encourage our students to talk and play with their peers in school without the need for technology. Please see our Student Support and Behaviour Policy for further details We are also aware of the changes in demands on young people's time when they join secondary school. We found out last year that on average, our year 7 students received approx. 900 messages through their phone in their first week of school. That can be overwhelming and stressful. We endeavor to upskill and educate our students on appropriate use of technology and e-safety throughout their time here. We encourage all our parents to keep abreast of social media/gaming updates and to educate themselves on e safety via www.thinkuknow.com and through our website page https://www.crossleyheath.org.uk/parent-zone/e-safety-advice/

Y7 Curr rric iculu lum

The curriculum at Crossley Heath is designed to support our vision for each of

  • ur young people to flourish as an individual, to be curious, to be resilient and

to love learning. We want our young people to receive an education which is well-rounded, exciting and challenging in our selective context, which enables them to grow intellectually, culturally, socially and personally, and which recognises and celebrates the diversity of our school community.

  • Maintain breadth at each key stage, ensuring a flexible, coherent progression through their learning

journey in order to fully support their ambitions and aspirations

  • Include a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom which supports every student,

regardless of background, to gain a broader cultural awareness beyond their immediate experience and to make a positive contribution to society.

  • Ensure a knowledge-rich environment where literacy and numeracy support students to become

expert readers and mathematicians; enabling them to flourish as independent learners and critical thinkers competent in analysis.

  • Give students the necessary knowledge and skills to fully equip them to excel in their external

exams.

  • Encourage students to consider career aspirations at all stages of their school life, to take on

challenges and responsibility, to be leaders and work as a team and develop skills which will secure their success in their future careers.
