All children read in school for a minimum of half an hour every day. Here are a list of activities that we carry out every day in our ‘Sound Time’ sessions:

  • Practise reading the speed sounds (VIDEO)
  • Practise reading the green and red words

  • First read of the book- identify tricky words

  • Re-read the book and ask comprehension

questions

  • Final read of the book with fluency and

expression (VIDEO)

Refer to handout 2- 10 top tips on hearing your child read.

Please direct your attention to point 10, if you have exhausted activities relating to the home reading book you receive weekly, then you should be looking for other forms of texts to use during your short reading sessions. Also, look at point 4, be aware of stamina of your child, there is no harm in reading some of the text to them, however expect them to track each word with their finger- like partner work at school.
