The reason for Amendment One was the citizens insisted their personal freedoms be protected. ❖ The personal freedoms are: freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, right to assembly, right to petition. ❖ The effect of Amendment One was the personal freedoms of the citizens are protected. Because of Amendment One today people can speak their opinions and viewpoints on any topic without penalty. There is no state established religion- people are free to believe or not believe in the God of their choice. In addition, citizens can assemble to peaceably protest something they don’t agree with and have the right to petition the government for change.
