Amendment One was proposed on September 25, 1789 and was ratified on December 15, 1791. ❖ The reason for Amendment One was the citizens insisted their personal freedoms be protected. The personal freedoms are: freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, right to assembly, right to petition. ❖ The effect of Amendment One was the personal freedoms of the citizens are protected. Because of Amendment One today people can speak their opinions and viewpoints on any topic without

• penalty. There is no state established religion- people are free to believe or not believe in the God
