  3. 10/17/2019 1 in 10 Autistics have an “Island of Genius” “Savant syndrome is a rare, but extraordinary, condition in which persons with serious mental disabilities, including autistic disorder, have some ‘island of genius’ which stands in marked, incongruous contrast to overall handicap. As many as one in 10 persons with autistic disorder have such remarkable abilities in varying degrees. Can you have both? “ The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM ‐ IV) stated that a person couldn’t have autism and ADHD .   5. 10/17/2019 Real Talk ASD diagnosis gets you MORE funding, accommodations, and more people believe it and give you the benefit of the doubt, so you don’t want to miss out on that if you can get it. Because…stigma and misinformation  . **Yes, this is dumb and sucks.** 13 Are we Over ‐ Diagnosing ADHD or ASD? YES! NO! • In young boys with late birthdays UNDERGIAGNOSING: (not matured yet) • Women & Girls • Maybe also young boys • ALL adults • ALL elderly people • So…everyone else! 14 Flaws in Diagnostic Process? HECK YEAH! 1. Over reliance on how well you do in school: some ADHDers can do great at school if their skills are in alignment with the school’s needs 2. Gender bias!! 3. Inter ‐ rater Issues (Low Agreement between Diagnosticians) 4. Myths !!! 5. Expensive Process: FYI, We do ADHD & ASD diagnosis for approx. $500, and specialize in Females with ADHD/ASD) 15 5

  6. 10/17/2019 Diagnosis Myths Abound! • Be smart • Have a graduate degree ADHDers/Autistics Can’t: • Be a professional/successful • Have ADHD/ASD together • Make Eye Contact • Be married/good at dating • Be Charming • Be too social • Be too good at school • Look normal • Have PTSD • Be Female • Engage in special interests that are not mechanical • Be Funny Ex.
