Joint effort of LifeWatch Italy (->LifeWatch ERIC) e-Science European Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Ecosystem research. Operates facilities (virtual collaborative environments) for integration, analysis and data modelling -> service provider LTER Europe (-> Long-Term Ecosystem Research) on ecosytem functioning and its processes. Consists of 488 LTER Sites and 50 Research Platforms organised in 23 European national networks -> networking with the community

Scope of Ecoportal A registry for different types of semantic resources : • ontologies • thesauri • semantically enhanced reference lists, also taxonomic lists, protocols? • recommended Ontology Design Patterns
A portal with multiple functions • browsing services for ontologies/thesauri/metadata navigation, visualisation, translation • searching services within/across, structured, advanced • mapping services automatic/manual mappings, upload • annotation services -> testing NCBO BioPortal technology
Social services • Interface for ontology submission by users • Gatekeeping : two step-approach (validation) • Social interaction : commenting on ressources (also on class level) • Semantic marketplace : supplier/user exchange service

Why another Portal? … there exists already Agroportal, ESIP! BUT • EcoPortal focuses on ecology, biodiversity and ecosystem observation research • EcoPortal includes ontologies, thesauri and reference lists of the domain -> A dedicated portal to a specific community allows better curation and customised services -> EcoPortal ensures alignment with upcoming standards related to ontology metadata and APIs
