  6. History of Deep Massage Early studies in philosophy, music composition, yoga and psychotherapy 1977 began professional practice of massage Influential bodywork studies – at Chicago School of Massage Therapy with Bob King, et al – 1979-1980 Structural Bodywork Certification, Postural Kinesiology and Cranio- sacral training with Rolfer, Daniel Blake – 1982 and 1983 Teaching anatomy and deep tissue at Chicago School of Massage Therapy - 1982-1984 Cranio-sacral study with early students of Dr. Upledger – learned that quality of touch and listening is more important that pressure 1983 changed name of method from “Deep Tissue” to “Deep Massage” Since 1986 studied Zero Balancing with Dr. Fritz Smith - learned how to think and touch structure and energy simultaneously From 1986 on, Deep Massage theory and practice dovetailed with ZB theory and practice 1996-1999 Developed and published articles on the Seven Dimensions of Touch model in Massage Therapy Journal

  7. Deep Massage & the Renaissance of Touch John Naisbitt in Megatrends spoke of future as one of “High Tech and High Touch” Increasing importance of actual rather than virtual reality Touch – the medium of actual reality – medium of connection - the leading edge of cultural evolution? “Human hand, acting in concert with the heart, mind and spirit is arguably the most sophisticated tool in the known universe.”

  8. Models of Structure and Energy Tensegrity model/theory of structure – Buckminster Fuller Fascia and muscles move and support the body – in nature the soft members determine the position of the hard members (e.g. idea that myofascia determines position of bone) Fascia can change – perhaps more influential are changes in the brain. “Education is long, manipulation is short.” - What people learn becomes theirs for a lifetime. Rolfing calls itself “somatic education.” Relaxation is a function of nervous system telling the muscles what to do. The nervous system gives rise to thought, beliefs, emotions, memory – so all of these are relevant and may be affected by deep bodywork.

  9. Structure / Energy Structure Energy • Particle • Wave • Matter • Movement • Mass • Vibration • Solid • Force • Tangible • Flow • Form • Invisible? • Visible • Awareness • Physical body • Sensation • Anatomy (Western model) • Psyche – Cells • Thoughts – Tissues • Ideas – Organs • Beliefs – systems • Emotion • Palpable • Imagination • Concrete • Spirit • Information • Communication

  10. Integration of Energy and Structure Mindful touch integrates energy and structure. “The only medium in the known universe that simultaneously and consciously contacts both structure and energy.” It therefore is the perfect medium for healing the negative effects of mind-body dualism.

  11. Interface #1 Touch which consciously engages human energy and structure needs to cultivate a heightened sense of boundaries. We meet – we do not stream into each other or blend or channel. This is called working at “interface”.

  12. Interface #2 Interface requires psycho-mechanics as well as body mechanics. What are you doing with your mind – as well as with your body? Interface/mindfulness is enhanced by focusing our attention at the meeting place of two people. This is heighened by graceful body position and movement, relevant thought, emotional clarity, and an attitude of highest personal regard toward the client and oneself.

  13. Experiments with Interface Handshake – see DM book p. 16 Hugs Bodywork
