Career Clusters and Majors ■ We believe that when schools organize around a student’s future, the student will see greater purpose and meaning in their education. ■ Students will work harder when they know that what they are learning will lead to a meaningful goal. ■ Organizing electives into Career Clusters is a way to encourage students to think about how high school classes help prepare them for the future. ■ You will choose a major today and will have the opportunity to change that major in 9 th and 10 th grade.

High School Majors – A few tips 1. Students have to take a certain number of electives. A few count towards graduation requirements (PE, health, computer science). Others are based on interest (art, agricultural, engineering) 2. College major is different than high school major. They do not have to match! 3. You can choose a major to try something new in high school OR take a major to help prepare for a career. Automotive Tech York Technical College Automotive Tech USC to major in Business Management 4. To be recognized as a completer, students must have four units in one major above graduation requirements. 5. The choice of a major does not impact graduation because SC Diploma requirements are standardized.

Your first IGP on April 28 will begin your five year plan ■ Goal - To prepare each student to successfully transition into Life after High School – This could be employment, enlistment in the military, attending college for a one-year certificate program, a two year associate’s degree, or a four-year bachelor’s degree.

Review of IGPs, Majors, and Careers ■ High schools are organized to bring meaning, interest, and personal attention to our students through career clusters and IGPs ■ On April 28, you will develop your first IGP through declaring a career cluster and registering for 9 th grade classes. ■ You may change that career cluster and major each year. ■ Students who complete a career cluster will be recognized at graduation. However, it is not required to graduate.

High School Classes in Middle School ■ The uniform grading scale and the system for calculating GPAs and class rank will apply to all courses carrying high school units of credit (also known as Carnegie units); including units earned at the middle school levels. ■ Retake Policy (Algebra, English, French, and Spanish) – Benefits to retaking – Greater mastery of material – The highest grade earned out of both attempts is what calculates into both GPAs.

Grades and GPA – SC Uniform Grading Policy Note: Students who withdraw from a course after three days in a 9 week course, five days in a semester course, or 10 days in a year-long course will receive an F on their transcript. This will be reflected on the transcript and be factored into the student’s overall grade point average and class rank.
