 SPHE Programme : relationship and sexuality Education (Accord), Health talks by GP on women’s health, awareness of drug, alcohol addiction issues, Personal safety, Healthy eating Talk by

  • dietician. Minding my Mind Week & mental health awareness.

 Pastoral programme – 6th year Holiday, Carol service, House Competitions, Faith formation classes, 6th class retreat, Mindfulness meditation, Graduation Mass.  6th Year Leadership opportunities!  Extra-curricular programme – Debating, art, music, choir, Sports - DO NOT STOP SPORTS!

Hit the ground running in Sept

 Before school starts back get her in the zone Is she in a good routine? Not burning the candle Are all her notes In folders? Discuss her weekly study routine with her: Put the plan in place from Day 1. when will she study? Do exercise? Extra classes?  Benefits of after school study: structure, social support.  How can you support her? Have meal times at set times, quite times at weekends.  Weekend routine: 2- 3 blocks of study between Sat and Sunday  Establish Balance from the beginning: When is her down time ? When is she going to take exercise/go for walks?

 When will socialising happen?  Do you need to Re-negotiate the terms and conditions?  18th birthday parties, they will have an impact on weekend revision work.

Work on her Well-being Toolbox

 How good is she at keeping the balance now?  Develop positive habits over the summer, get her to identify activities and habits that help: exercise routine, take up yoga, dance, mindfulness, walking the dog, Getting organised, time management, looking after herself –does she have enough ME-TIME  Establish a communication basis – spend time with her, go for coffee, take her places over the

  • summer. Be her ‘1 Good Adult’.

 In 6thYear, try and have a time in the day when you connect in with her so she knows you are there when times get tough, (But don’t mention study!)

CAO Course and Career Research

 “I’ve no idea what I want to do” – She actually does , but she hasn’t narrowed down her options.  Does she need to do work experience?  Research college courses in depth.  Bring her to all the major Dublin Open Days even if she isn’t interest, go with her. Be Open to different colleges. 50% of students go to UCD and they don’t all have good experiences!  Encourage her to have a vision of where she wants to be next year and maybe after college.  Encourage her to dream big: and support her dream whatever it may be.  Be prepared for her to change her mind a million times  Work Experience and talking to people in courses and careers is THE BEST WAY to help her figure out what she is interested in. It removes uncertainty (Use your network)

Building on from 5th Year

 What subjects went well and not so well in 5th year?  Don’t be hard on her if summer results are not where they could/should be.  5th Year Exams are a building

  • block. If she gets a D grade in

5th year it doesn’t mean that is what she is going to get in the LC.  She needs support and encouragement to realise that she can do better.  She can only count 6 subjects for points purposes.

Student CAO Myths and Fears

 “My Leaving Cert results will decide my life and future happiness”  “By filling out the CAO I am choosing the career /job I’m going to do for the rest of my life and what if I get it wrong!”  “If I don’t get X number of points and get in to UCD, I will be miserable and have a miserable life”.  Reassure her that she is only picking the next stop on the journey. She is choosing a course for the next 3-5

  • years. What matters is that she finds that

course interesting and it suits her strengths and skills.

Points to note

Criteria for undergraduate entry to medicine since 2009: The HPAT Test (end Feb) register online Bonus Points for Maths: +25 points for a Honours H6(40% or better) Graduate entry: medicine, veterinary, Nursing Conversion courses after primary degree: Psychology, Law, Physiotherapy, Business, IT, secondary Teaching, primary Teaching, Speech and language Therapy. CAO handles almost all degree and certificate applications (Level 6,7& 8) LCVP: Can be used for points, not Matriculation, so it doesn’t count as one of your 6 subjects.

What is College matriculation?

 Matriculation refers to the minimum entry requirements for each college.  Matriculation subjects (Maths, English, Language)  The new “Pass” is 30% on an honours paper and 40% on an Ordinary level paper.  If you have 3 Higher C’s (H5) and 3 Ordinary D’s (06) you satisfy the matric. requirements for every college in Ireland for a level 8 Degree  If you have 5 Ordinary D’s, you satisfy the matric. requirements for every college in Ireland for a level 6 or 7 qualification.
