Metropolitan Championships

Lorraine Cook Memorial Trophy

Clubs are asked to nominate archers according to set criteria on the “Deed of Gift”. This trophy was first presented in 1989. Winner: Mitchell Campbell (Warringah) Lorraine Cook was a member of Illawarra Archers who died after an illness. This trophy is awarded to the most improved archer regardless of age.

Janet Wilks Memorial Trophy – Veteran of the Year

The trophy is awarded to the Veteran of the Year and was first presented in 1994 by her family shortly after her death. Winner: Kevin Girard (Penrith City Archers) Janet Wilks was a member of Ku-ring-gai Bowmen. Legend had it that she loved to shoot clout. Janet worked as a nurse at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Youth National Championships 2018

Archery NSW sent a very strong team the 2018 Youth Nationals at Twin City Archers, Morwell, Victoria. The Team on consisted of, please stand when we call you name. Female Male Recurve Chevyonne Cheah Giorgio Vasiliades Ammrutha Vashetharan Jack Chambers-McLean Elizabeth Parrington Jamie Hatch Eddie Upston Henry Malin Nic Kyriazis Rudy Doyle Compound Eva Norton Hayden Crampton Alyssa Mollema Mitchell Campbell Claire Crampton Blake Hayes Madeline Boyle Brad Mooy Josie Hatch Brodie Hatch Let’s give them all a round of applause. We also had some overall champions:

  • Eddie Upston won the Overall Male Recurve Champion.
  • Ammurtha Vashetharan won the Overall Female Recurve Champion.
  • Alyssa Mollema won the Overall Female Compound Champion.

Overall, NSW Archers brought home 67 of the 208 medals award. Congratulations to all our Junior Archers and we wish them the very best at the upcoming 2019 Youth Nationals in Armidale.

2018 Trans-Tasman Challenge

The Trans-Tasman is a Junior archery event between Australia and New Zealand, created to introduce athletes to competing internationally and matchplay. It is held every two years and changes between the hosting country. Below is the NSW Archers who made up the Australia Team. Perpetual Trophy for Overall Junior Boy Target Champion (Tony Marturano Memorial Trophy)

Winner: Branden Tse – SOPA – Score: 1275 Trophy presented by the Bridges family in 2009 to honour the memory of Tony Marturano a Paralympian. Tony was also a coach and he competed in numerous tournaments until his death in early 2009.

Perpetual Trophy for Overall Junior Girl Target Champion (Grace Drake Memorial Trophy)

The perpetual shield was first awarded to the Junior Girl Recurve Target Champion in 1997 to commemorate Grace’s contribution to archery. Winner: Ammrutha Vashetharan – SOPA – Score: 1240 Grace, along with husband Laurie were founders of the sport of archery in NSW. They set up the NSW Archery Society which in 1946 became known as Sydney Bowmen. In 1948 Grace and her husband formed ArcheryNSW.

2018 Senior National Champions

2018 World Archery Field Championships

We had 3 Australian archers attend the 2018 World Archery Field Championships in Cortina Italy in the Dolomite’s (Italian Alps) from 4th – 9th September 2018., including NSW Archer Michael Fisher from Illawarra Archers. Michael Fisher ranked 8th with a 649, out of 32 competitors. He won his first match (3rd Round) against the 16th ranked archer in a one arrow shoot off after trailing by 3 points with two targets left. Unfortunately he went on to lose his second match against the 5th ranked archer Frederik Lundmark (Sweden) 82-83. Lundmark lost his Bronze medal match to Brady Ellison (USA) Michael’s final ranking for the World Championships was 9th, which is an amazing achievement. Michael also went on to win the Barebow division at the Lancaster Classic Indoor event in America. Congratulations Michael, you had a fantastic 2018. We will now watch his winning match.

Interview with Elizabeth Hole

Elizabeth Hole from Liverpool City Archers had an amazing 2018 archery career. She attended the World Masters Games in Lausanne medalling in multiple events, achieved 6 gold medals at the National Championships in Morwell and was awarded the NSW Sports Master of the Year. Please welcome Liz to the stage. Q: Liz, you had a fantastic 2018, tell us a little bit about how you got into archery Q: Would you like to talk us through your trip to the World Master Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland? Q: Coming back from there on a high, how did you continue your amazing training leading into the National Championships? Q: At Nationals, you made the NSW State Team. You also achieved 6 gold medals including the overall and the

Troy Adams was a junior member of Penrith City Archers. Troy was tragically killed in a car accident in 1985 on his way to a tournament. During his brief archery career he was a state representative, state team captain and Australian representative. The trophies were awarded to the Overall State Champion Junior Boy & Girl Compound in 1985 by the NSW junior archers in memory of Troy. Best All-round Intermediate Recurve (Arthur Chapman Trophy): Ella-Rose Carson (Armidale) Best All-round Intermediate Compound: Mitchell Campbell (Warringah) Arthur Chapman owned a sports store in Rockdale in the 1950’s and 60’s and was a major supplier of archery

  • equipment. His son Gary was a swimmer who won a bronze medal at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. The

trophy was first awarded in 1962 to the Best All-round Intermediate Recurve Archer. Best All-round Under 12 Competitor: Branden Tse (SOPA)

Junior Highest Aggregate Scores Overall

This award is given to the highest aggregate scores for Junior archers i.e. cubs vs under 20. All presented by CCS Pty Limited, owned by Malcolm Fear. Best All-Round Junior Boy Recurve: Branden Tse (SOPA) – Score: 3583 Best All-Round Junior Girl Recurve: Chevyone Cheah (SOPA) – Score: 3383 Best All-Round Junior Boy Compound: Mitchell Campbell (Warringah) – Score: 3811 Best All-Round Junior Girl Compound: Josie Hatch (Armidale) – Score: 3687 Malcolm and his son Jackson participated in archery for many years. Jackson broke many Australian records and in 1994 scored a perfect Australian Indoor. In 1996 he was Junior World Champion and broke an Olympic record in the Teams Matchplay at Atlanta. Malcolm died tragically in 2005 and Jackson one year later. The four marble trophies were first awarded in 1991 to Best All-Round Junior Boys & Girls.

Ross Herron Memorial Shield

Winner: SOPA – 590 Ross Herron was a founding member of the Archery Society of NSW. Every time a club member places within a NSW competition, as per AA rules – points are awarded to Clubs. This award goes to the club with the highest score.
