2010 Presentation Day and 2009-10 Season Awards
Bert Graham Memorial Pool, 21 March The final event of the 2009-2010 swimming season was the club’s annual Presentation Day, held at the Bert Graham pool on Sunday March 21. After a leisurely warm up, Presentation Day started with the club’s 400m, 800m and 1500m time trials, which is a change of pace from the sprinting most have been practicing for All Juniors. The challenge of facing a 1500m event is viewed differently by different swimmers, and this year, while most opted for a 400 or 800m swim, the 1500m produced one of the more remarkable efforts
- witnessed. While Callum King, always up for a distance challenge, dived in and swam a new age 1500m
record, breaking the pool age 400m and 800m records on the way, he was accompanied by one of the younger first year swimmers, Aruna
- Morrissey. Aruna impressed everyone with her determination in the
1500m – in fact, ignoring the bell, she tried to continue on for more! She finished in a time of 32:08.84. Just to make the effort was an inspiration to the other swimmers, particularly the younger ones, and hopefully next year more will take the challenge. Other notable swims included Aruna’s younger sister Shalini, also a first year swimmer, who swam an 800m in 18:02.64, another determined effort, Rebecca Holmes smashed the club’s female age and Open 800m records, and Tony Rodda improved on his club Veteran’s record set last year.
Aruna Morrissey completes the 1500… or is that the 1600m?
After the time trials, the presentations of the trophies, championships and various awards were made, which are listed below. The efforts of the chefs in providing a delicious BBQ lunch were then demolished in rapid time by the by then very hungry swimmers and parents. Following lunch, club photos were taken, although unfortunately not all swimmers could be present, and then followed the now traditional pool games with the pool dragon, much enjoyed by all the swimmers. A very relaxed way to end the season!
