CALIFORNIA PBIS COALITION Rural Humboldt County CA • 32 School Districts, with over 80 school sites, across approximately 4000 square miles in Northern CA • 18,501 Enrolled Students • 70% of Students are on Free/Reduced Lunch • 1 of 3 County’s in CA with the Highest ACE Scores • 2016/17 Suspension Rates: • 1 Suspension – 61.9% (SA 69.3%) • Multiple Suspensions – 38.1% (SA30.7%) Special Education Rates: • Approximately 20% - State average 12%

CALIFORNIA PBIS COALITION Adverse Childhood Experiences - ACES Humboldt, Mendocino and Butte counties are the only three counties in California with more than 70 percent of their population reporting one or more adverse childhood experiences. CALIFORNIA PBIS COALITION • Established in 2015 • Needs were clear – Our WHY • Special Education Rates higher than the state average. • Need for Mental Health in the schools. • Move from a culture of reaction to prevention. • Vision of a sustainable model. • LCAPs and School Climate – growing awareness. • The unique needs of rural Humboldt - the culture reflected throughout. • Initial PBIS work – 2012 MHSA Grant – three identified LEAs. • DHHS underwriting and support. • It was about time!!!!

CALIFORNIA PBIS COALITION Cohort 2 What Worked and Lessons 2016-17 Learned: What Worked: • Two-Day Summer Institute • Summer Institute for 12 school sites. • 10 Sites Continued from Cohort 1 • Restorative Practices – trainings offered. • Added 12 School Sites to Cohort 2 • SUMS supporting pre-existing vision, and • PLC’s Every Month began Region 1 training opportunities in MTSS. • Coaches Meetings Every Month Lessons Learned: • Restorative Practice Licensed Trainers • Implementation Science relevant to our • Peter - Region 1 Lead, CA SUMS structure – (exploration/implementation) • Haley - County Lead, CA SUMS • Buy-in (70-80% for strong implementation) Need for Admin Support - shared vision. • 2 KDS Sites to Trial SUMS

Cohorts 1 and 2 • PBIS framework with Responsive Classroom • 2 New School Sites • Restorative Practices demand high • Summer institute catered to only 1 site • Recommendation for MTSS in SELPA Review, • Trainings offered at HCOE and for Districts in DA • PLC’s Every Other Month Lessons Learned: • Coaches Meetings Every Other Month • PLC’s waning attendance. LEAs requesting TA during working hours. • Day-long Coaches Retreat • Coaching must be evaluated and encouraged. • Restorative Practice Trainings • RP and whole district vs. COE trainings • For district/site and at COE.
