Project Description and Purpose

The Florida DepartmentofTransportatlon {FOOT) District Six has lnlHated a Project Development and Environment {PD&El study

In an effort to provide Improvements along SR 25/US 27/0keechobee Road from SR 997 /Krome Avenue to NW 79th Avenue in Miami-Dade County. During the PD&E phase, preliminary engineering and environmentally feasible alternatives are developed

and evaluated to determine which alternative most effectively addresses the needs associated with the project. The need for Improvements results from a combination of safety Issues and traffic operations deficiencies. SR 25/ US 27/0keechobee Road serves as part of the Strategic lntermodal System {SIS) and the Florida Intrastate Highway System (FIHS) and is also designated =~;~r~:~u1~f~l~t1~JY~!~c~j>'F~:~;ik~. s~2~;t~f~P~ar~:;~!~s~ 1-195. Okeechobee Road Is also Identified as a major truck route and Is vital to the movement of freight. This facility provides critical access to the Town of Medley, an Important origin and destination for regional freight activity. The objective of this project Is to provide overall traffic operation Improvements along the study corridor through the provision

  • f Intersection improvements, frontage road enhancements, roadway improvements and Improvements at canal crossings.

The approach to this project wlll be to thoroughly assess the safety, mobility and community needs of the corridor, develop alternatives to address those needs, and evaluate them according to regulatory agency requirements and community values.

Public Involvement

FOOT has embarked on a public involvement program as a part of this PD&E Study. Public involvement began In spring 2012 and will continue throughout the project. This process Is designed to ensure public Input In the development of alternatives by actlvelyencouraglng and facilitating the participation
  • f

the general public. citizen groups, interest groups, elected and appointed

  • fficials, environmental resource agencies, and other stakeholders. Opportunities to comment include communication with

project staff, attending public me~ngs and through the projectweb~te. Public participation is solicited without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, religion, disability or family status.
