  3. o Newborn screening consists of 3 components  Blood Spot (collected just after 24 hours of life)  Critical Congenital Heart Disease (performed after 24 hours of life)  Hearing Screening (most often collected after 24 hours of life, though not required) o It is a public health service that reaches nearly every baby born in the United States (and most other countries, world wide) o Screening occurs to check for treatable life-altering conditions that may not be obvious at birth.

  10.  Every year, over 5,000 babies nationwide are born with one of the conditions included in the state screening panels.  Once symptoms for these conditions appear, they are often irreversible.  Most babies affected with a condition identified through newborn screening that receive early treatment will grow up to be healthy with normal development.
